Hikers get lost all the fucking time.
We have a extended community rescue group where I'm from where the core rescue services brings in locals to cover more ground.

If the hiker stays on the trail, they are often found by a random person who wasn't even part of the recovery team and is in a gas station drinking coffee while we are all out there looking for them.
If the hiker is off the trail but wearing bright/reflective colors they are often found readily because they are visible from either the trail or a vantage point.

Someone who is underground, wearing camo or under some kind of natural shelter?
They are fucked.
They don't get found on the trail, can't be located by forward teams or even from the air.
That's why the first thing distressed hikers should do is make a signal- a line of rocks across the trail, a geometric marker which can be seen from the air, a flag or some kind.
When it gets cold that person is going to crawl under anything and we will never find them.
It's at that point we have to do a line search and just pray they are where we guess they are- because we can't line search much ground.

Even experienced hikers are not immune to misfortune, a level 100 woodsman can still get bitten by a snake in the woods, break their leg, phone, whistle,flare gun, sophomore flag falling- or they can become trapped under a fallen tree, some kind of scrap metal abomination, or fucked up by a bear that din du nuffin.

If you want to run a HTI on an imaginary missile platform at 1.2KM with your wildcat large caliber rifle go ahead- but please bring a reflective vest for when you injure yourself in the middle nowhere without telling anyone where you are we can find you

For starters: tell these people a knife is kinda useless when camping. This is the ultimate shit test if they actually go out. We all know it’s nice to have, but hardly used.

And don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge MR fanboy, but they’re using the wrong gear for the wrong shit. Nobody needs a 3DAP unless you’re in the military or larping.

For bushcraft it makes sense I guess.. Like if I had to only bring one piece of kit I'd probably pick some giant knife/hatchet over a tent.. But if you're actually prepared? I'll end up using a pair of pliers 5x more often than a knife.

I'm not a military larper but I never liked wearing colorful shit, so all my clothing and outside equipment are black, grey, or dark green.
I do have an emergency bivvy that is bright orange and a space blanket that I could use in case of emergency though.

This. I work as a biologist and one of our jobs provided us with green notebooks. A number of times I would set it down and then have to panic search for it for 10 minutes because I couldn’t fucking see it.

It annoys me about as much as litter. I like to pack stuff i know I'm not going to use, even if I'm just out for a day trip
Going for a 5 hour hike? Sure I will pack 4 extra shirts 8 pairs socks, spare underwear, tarp, rope etc etc
I do this for 2 reasons, one if shit happens atleast i have something to fall back on,
Two It's good practice for when I actually go on a 10 day hike in the mountains and need to pack heavy
As a rule i don't have a backpack that weighs less then 10kg, it's a great fucking workout too

My most used knife out and about is a little 3" fixed blade. People with gigantic blades all say they use them for batoning, but why not actually just get a little hatchet then? It is way better to split wood with. And how often are these people batoning shit?
