I highly recommend getting a compass with adjustable declination so you dont have to do extra maths. Set the declination according to your map and then you will be good for the rest of your trip. Shit gets confusing when you're new to reading a compass so having an adjustable declination leads to less errors.
Practice this shit in your neighborhood before you venture out into the wilderness. Pull up google maps and use it to help you set your compass. Then try to navigate to a tree across the street or something. I've had to help many hikers who brought a cheapo compass and never used it before thinking it would point them in the right direction.
