Does anyone make a minimalist leather boot with better reputation for durability than Belleville's MINI-MiL boot[1] but with a price lower than the bespoke options[2, for example]? I like my Vibram FiveFingers, but I also like being able to blouse my boots to keep ticks out.

Mini-mils are what I use, had my pair for about a year and they're holding up so far. My hope is to switch to socks/sandals for the summer.

I also went really crazy and got a pair of these. I haven't had a chance to try them yet, waiting for it to get a bit warmer, but I'm very excited.

The socks I've only worn on one walk around the neighborhood thus far, but I think if you're going to commit to barefoot running they should be great. I've tried Xero sandals for running and the worst part of that is the curling if you hit the edge of the sole against the ground and curl it away from your foot. You can of course also get pebbles and sticks in between your foot and the sole. The Skinner Sock neatly eliminates both problems because it is contoured to your foot and totally sealed up to the ankle. That also means you don't have the "lift" problem with needing to pull your toes up to lift the toe of your sandal, the sock is always right around your toes.

Strangely, the packaging mentions that they're not meant for "extended use" on asphalt. I think they want you to use them only on natural surfaces; grass, packed earth, etc.

I hope Skinners makes an over-ankle version of these some day, that would be total perfection of the concept. As it is, my main issue is that they don't protect the ankle from ticks. If they got over the ankle and up the calf, you could douse the whole thing in permethrin and be pretty well covered against ticks.

Standard modern footwear impedes the natural function of the foot and can cause weakness and injury. Minimalist shoes seek to offer protection to the foot while minimizing or eliminating these impediments.

Switching from normie running shoes to a proper barefoot running technique fixed the knee problems I was having. It's far easier to use this technique in shoes designed for this kind of movement than shoes that are not.

One issue was that I was doing a lot of heel striking, which is the tendency when running in normie shoes. This can cause knee problems primarily in two ways. Firstly, by landing on the heel, there is no ankle flexion to absorb the shock of impact, sending a jolt straight through your ankle and up through your knee and hip; by landing on the midfoot or forefoot, muscle tension from ankle flexion takes the impact more than your bones and cartilage. Secondly, without the strength gain through the foot and lower leg from using your natural shock absorbers (and by having an excess of artificial support within a shoe), your foot loses the ability to support itself, which can cause ankle alignment issues (most commonly pronation/flat feet) which in turn rotates the knee and causes undue and uneven wear and high potential for injury. I was doing between 20 and 30 hours of physical training per week back then, so issues like that which wouldn't overly bother a normal semi-sedentary person were actually big issues for me.

Now that I've got the midfoot striking technique down I can apply it while wearing normal boots, but while wearing minimalist footwear it's much easier to run that way, I have better agility and balance, it's easier to avoid heel strikes while walking, and I get to train support muscles that would atrophy in a normal shoe. I don't train nearly as much as I used to but I am getting older so it's still a good idea to keep strong feet and good joint alignment--using minimalist shoes for everything other than really heavy rucking seems like a pretty good idea to me.

I don't get motion sickness but I've never been out on any body of water more turbulent than the Great Lakes so I don't know for sure.

Educate yourself. Minimalist shoes do make a big fucking difference, but being a smooth brain you'll just take whatever garbage they'll shill you at the store.

Been wearing minimalist footwear for about 2 years now. For me, there has been a big improvement in comfort, foot/knee/calf strength, and running/hiking injuries/soreness. It's gotten to the point where I actually cannot put 'normal' shoes on without immediate discomfort and soreness after say a walk. I haven't had any injuries or soreness with 10k runs or multi day through hikes with 150km+. There is something to be gained by letting your feet move naturally and transferring impacts through the calf muscle rather than through the heel into the knee and then into the hips.

There aren't many options. You can take a look at Vivobarefoot's Tracker boot, but they apparently have been having durability problems lately. I honestly might just end up shelling out for some Russels and have them boots for life.

Well, that's a good idea, but ticks aren't my only concern. The point of the socks is to have very minimal amounts of "shoe" and any layer you add onto that is going to reduce that effect, even if it's not by much with just a sock. The little pamphlet they sent with the box even suggests wearing light socks with it to put a washable barrier between your skin and the sock.

Now that you suggested it that's probably what I'll do, but I'd still hope for a future version of the sock-shoe that goes up over the ankle so I can wear only the sock and no extra socks underneath.

Problem for me is that there's really just not much else available for minimalist boots. Especially not at a reasonable price point.

These Waxi boots seem to be "flat" only in the sense that there's no lugs to leave an impression on the ground, there's still a very noticeable heel-to-toe drop.

Maybe it could be modified, sand the heel down or something. Might make the interaction with the ankle a little weird though.

Not bad, no heel to toe drop and a wide toebox, but it's still a 9mm sole even when you take the 3.5mm insole out. Well, that's more a matter of preference I think, 9mm is still thin enough to call it minimalist.

They go out for at least a day hike with me every weekend, but I don't wear them every day. I will also mention that I took them for a walk around the neighborhood the first day I got them, stubbed my toe on a bit of sidewalk and put a hole in the toe of boot.

They're comfy for sure, and their thermal sole is nice, but the durability on the last version was not so great, and you can't replace the sole (maybe someone can) once it wears down. There was problems with the sole beginning to separate where the toe box flexes, same spot and problem as most other glued soles. IDK if they fixed the issue yet as guys were getting 3-4 years of hard use out of them on older pairs.

Jesus just looked at the prices again and they have gone up about $60 CAD not including taxes. I'd be paying almost $500 CAD for a pair. Fuck that. I'd rather drop an extra bit of cash for some Russel's at that point and have shoes that are repairable. I know for a fact Russel's would last 15-25 years minimum.

It's only $240 on the American site, which I show as 295 Canuckistani rupees. $240 is about half of what a Russell's Thula Thula would cost.

I have a pair and have managed to get a good bit of use out of them so ill share my thoughts.
First off they're really comfy and i've never had any blisters or discomfort. I'd go off the EU sizes as i think the uk sizes are a bit small. Without going over the benefits of minimalist foot wear I found I adapted quite quickly too them and can do long treks with weight without any problems. I do really like them but they do have a few short comings. First off they don't have a proper webbed tongue, it ends at about the 4th eyelet which considering they've got a waterproof membrane is kinda crap and restricts them to drier weather. Speaking on that membrane i dont think it breathes very well, at the end of a long day hiking your socks will pretty much be fully damp with sweat, more so than i've experienced with other boots. This is because its a generic no brand membrane instead of a goretex or similar and considering the price its a bit of a shitter. Not sure on the durability, so far so good, I can imagen the sole might start to come away at some point due to the design so it'll probs need a bit of attention with a spot of glue every now and then. Oh and they are very slippy in wet muddy conditions, but this more so down to there being no heal and minimalist so i think its a given.

If you're in the uk and after a 3 season boots then i'd recommend them but if you're after something you can trudge through thick mud then i'd go for something more traditional. I think the uk price is hard to justify so I wouldn't pay anymore for import charges and stuff if youre not from the uk.

I actually made a pair of these for my 6th grade science/invention fair like 10 years ago by spaying plastidip onto the bottom of a woolen sock. Cool to see that they actually exist

Those judges sound like assholes. My judges liked the sock idea but they didn't rate it top 3 unfortunately. The winner was a kid who wired a proximity sensor to an arduino that would beep when you got too close. It was meant to be used to keep kids from watching the TV from close up.

Anyone have experience hiking in them in the northeast US? Any other tips and advice on maintaining these shoes? I use a pair of Nick's work boots for work and I treat it regularly with wax and oil. I'm assuming it's the same for these mocs since they're leather. How's the break in period for these shoes?

How long do you guys think the life is on these mocs? I've had my Nick's boots for four years now and they're still going strong, although they're just about ready for a resole.

If I was to order a pair I would try a different type of leather Louand boot style.
Birdshooter, triple vamp, no membrane, chromexel leather. Leather insole, no mid sole , no heal, minimalist out sole.
I don't like silicone tanned leather (their weather tuff) so I would go with Chromexel because you can oil and wax it to what ever level of water resistance you want.

I have a pair of the regular Boulder boots and the Chukkas.

The Chukkas are roomy and very comfy, nice wide toe box, but that also makes them look a bit like clown shoes, but fuck the haters, they're just that comfortable, I will buy another pair for sure.

The boulder boots came in a bit too thin but otherwise the length and width was good. A little bit of Achilles tendon rub was going on with one boot. With the supplied cork insole it was tight in the front and mid foot with warmer socks, without the insole it was a perfect molded fit. They are leather, and they stretch, out so I might try and put the sole back in. Even without the insole though I find them comfortable. The tendon rub went away as the boots broke in. I don't know if going up half a size or not would help for zero break in, but If I was to get boulders again it would be nice to try them on before buying, except we have no consumer choice here in Canada so I had to gamble and order them online as no one carries them here without a $100 markup.

Anyone know a good lightweight, comfortable (as close to zero-drop as possible, i.e., no lifted heel) rubber boot that's cool enough for warm weather? Need a truly waterproof boot for stream crossings hunting in the PNW coast in September. Settled on rubber boots because they're the only actually waterproof boots other than overbuilt shit like Danners that weigh ten pounds each and have massive heels.

My main boot problem is the weight of the boots but I also like to be barefoot (which is obviously dangerous but I have a better grip because monkey feet, so something natural like that would be nice).

I've been running in vibram style toe shoes for years but there's no way I could hunt barefoot. I don't think anyone other than some amazonian tribesman could pull that off on the oregon coast. Terrible brushy, thorny, moist jungle out there.

Overall I have found them useful as a replacement for barefoot stuff. As a child I almost never wore shoes at home, even when playing in the backyard, as an adult I appreciate the ability to replicate that free-feet feeling in a wider variety of situations

don't buy altama unless it's made in the united states. wellco is probably good since they still do military contracts. mcrae is quality, but not welted - so i cant recommend it. mil-tec, rothco, fox outdoors, stansport, and commando all suck. then you've got boutiques like pike brothers, and their stuff is good - possibly the best, but also prohibitively expensive depending on where you live.

the problem with jungle boots is, they became a fashion statement a long time ago. you've got all these companies trying to capitalise on the trend, marking up their product 5 fold, and cutting corners.

they're directly molded, so it'll be significantly more expensive than glued. try finding a place that specialises in resoling directly molded footwear. as for the drainage vent, you may have to do some looking at fabric stores to find a suitable replacement.
