What were your experiences with National Parks? I just got back from Rocky Mountain NP (pic related) and I have to say I loved it. I had the whole place to myself since it wasn’t peak season yet.

Which parks have you been to? What was your experience?

I've been to Acadia, Arches, Bryce, Carlsbad, Channel Islands, Death Valley, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Grand Tetons, Joshua Tree, Kings Canyon, Petrified Forest, PinnaclesRedwood, Rocky Mountains, Sequoia, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Zion (yes: had to look at a list to remember).

Next on my list are Everglades and Dry Tortugas.

Our national parks are living proof that government can be a genuine force for good on planet Earth. They're the best thing our country has ever done.

I've visited and worked at many parks. As cliche as it is the parks are legit Americas best idea. It's a shame that some visitors don;t respect them but I think a lot of that is based on pure ignorance. The Interpretative rangers do an excellent job to educate people on how not to be shitheads inna woods.

It seems like the NP get a lot of hate on this board, so it’s good to see someone who actually goes /out/ enjoying the parks. I may hit up Shenandoah or Acadia next since I’m on the East Coast. Dry Tortugas sounds awesome but it requires a lot of planning.

Ever been to a National seashore, forest or history park? Those are pretty awesome, even if they don’t get the same attention.

Somehow I just never got that north when I still lived in California. But I'm moving back to the Eastern Sierra Nevadas eventually, so I'd love to see it. Never really got further North the Eastern Sierras than Yosemite. It always felt like "well I'm going to this area, so I should go to Yosemite." But that looks awesome. This board is a mixed bag. I get the impression a lot of people don't know what they're talking about. But hey! At least they're showing an interest in getting outside, and that's a better start than not. I'd rather someone read Twilight than didn't read at all, you know?

And yeah: hell of a lot of great parks besides just the national parks. I was always West Coast but, now that I live in Florida, I'm getting to see a lot of the historic parks when I drive North, and they're awesome. National/state forests are what I prefer for camping, because most of them you can just walk in and camp (as long as you follow guidelines and sometimes permitting). When it comes to the national parks I usually stay in cabins or nearby hotels. They're so built out that most of them aren't great for camping anyhow. Although even Yosemite and Yellowstone still have some good, back-country campsites if you know where to look.

The Virgin Islands national park is run by some of the most corrupt shitbags in any piece of the land with the United States in its name - they constantly let folks build inside of it and neglect half of the trails and properties to their name, while pocketing the majority of their funding. That said, it’s beautiful in its best parts, and I hope to move out there someday.

I used to work for the park service. Pretty cool gig minus the awful office politics. A lot of the old guard is retiring now which is where a lot of the nastiness comes from and fresh blood is getting promoted, so I think it’s getting better.

It's because NP's are most often associated with the popular ones that are overflowing with chink tour busses.
To get away from the you have to walk, further the better, but every time sans 1 I've been to a park I've been with non /out/ family. So no walking more than 500 yds because boomers / young nephews and nieces.

My one time in the Yellowstone backcountry was pretty based, but not worth the drive compared to my local "Wilderness Area"

The main attractions were all flooded with people but it wasn't difficult to get away from crowds, especially at Grand Canyon and Yellowstone.

Glacier National Park is the only exception to the rule that I've visited, The most visited parts are crowded but the best gems in the park are all deep in the back country which makes permitting is a pain in the ass. The camp sites all have crazy alpine lake views but they're all shared with other hikers.

Love National Parks, every one I've been to has been amazing, sure the popular parts can be crowded but it's for a reason. Can generally avoid crowds in the right season and even in peak season there are places to avoid the crowd. I've been to Yellowstone, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest, Death Valley, Rocky Mountain, Sand Dunes, Black Canyon, Badlands

all are great, if any is slightly underwhelming it's Rocky Mountain, nothing special compared to other mountains all around Colorado really, I prefer the San Juans actually. Every other park I feel is more special, nothing else like it, but RMNP is mountains, great mountains but not particularly special I feel. And I haven't yet been to the Sierras or Cascades or Glacier NP and only drove past the Tetons and Wind River but I get the feeling those mountains are more impressive. It's still a great park though and the closest to home for me.

Been to some national monuments/recreation areas or whatever that are just as impressive as national parks as well. Vermillion Cliffs, Escalante, Glen Canyon, Dinosaur are all spectacular.

By far, this is the superior /out/ country in terms of law, conservation, and ecological diversity. Yeah I do a lot of field work there. Gorgeous park but you have to work for the views. There's not really any easy access to high elevations, and most of the trails are well below tree line. I've kind of ruined it for myself since I just associate it with work, though.

It's all about the accessibility I think. Colorado's mountains are not very prominent or rugged compared to other ranges and it makes them very accessible. Most mountains here can be summited by your average fit hiker, a couple you can even drive right up to. Even in winter the mountains are very accessible, ski resorts all over the place.

But there's a lot of mountains here, a lot to explore and if you try hard enough you can find more rugged areas, and away from the crowds.

Also there's more to Colorado than mountains, might be what it's known for but some of the coolest places here aren't mountains. Black Canyon, Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, Dinosaur, and a lot of nice red rock formations on the western slope.

Big Bend is my favorite NP I think. It’s a pain in the ass to get to bc it’s so remote, but that also means it is relatively empty compared to NPs of similar caliber. Even then all of the best features (Emory Peak, South Rim, Ernst Tinaja, Marufo Vega, etc.) are relatively inaccessible to inexperienced tourists, so they get filtered into easy watered down stuff while you basically get the best parts all to yourself. I will never forget eating dinner on the south rim during sunset completely alone. It’s amazing.

It also has an insane variety. The desert is big and beautiful, but the high Chisos are completely different with big lush green trees. The river is also really beautiful and a completely different type of landscape.

Anyone else really love Big Bend? State park is cool too, next time I go I wanna explore the interior of that one more.

What makes it so hard to get to high elevations? I'm pretty fit so any amount of hiking for a week trip isn't going to be an issue for me. I just don't have equipment or know how to rock climb, but that's the only thing I can think of.

GF and I did a short little weekend backcountry ski camping trip in Lassen about a month ago and loved it. We had to take our skis off to cross a section that had been melted out by geothermal features, and passed steaming, bubbling volcanic mud pots, super cool!

In addition to Lassen, I've been to Death Valley and Yosemite in the past few months. I've also done separate, pretty serious 5-day camping trips in each of Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, done a number of short trips in Joshua Tree, plus done day hikes in Rocky Mountain NP, Redwoods, Crater Lake, Zion, Mt. Rainier. I've spent the most time in Olympic, where I grew up backpacking pretty much every year and have been a bunch as an adult too. Literally been backpacking in Olympic more times than I can count or remember.
So in all I think I've been to 12 national parks unless I'm forgetting any. I love them in general and think they're a wonderful part of our public lands system. Some are obviously more crowded than others and require more effort to get solitude, but I have enjoyed every single one I've been to.

Really anything along the 395. Drive it along the Eastern Sierras. Pick any road that heads into the mountains. You will find beautiful, protected forest that you can camp almost anywhere in.

If you've got the backpacking gear then you're definitely capable, it's just a pain in the ass because of how far you have to hike and how few trails stay in the alpine. Most of the trails that go above tree line are just out and backs too. If you want to through hike or spend a week in the backcountry, your high elevation options are really limited. You can certainly get pretty high up, but those places are generally isolated and are short lengths of trail.

Pic is a map of the park, and I've indicated the really high elevation sections of trail with red. To give you a sense of scale, that length of trail I've highlighted in the northwest corner is about 10 miles long.

Sure thing! Definitely look in to Okanogan-Wenatchee NF and Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie NF too, which border the park on the east and west sides, respectively. Their trail system is intertwined with the park, and you can get into some really gorgeous high country in the forests that just aren't as available in the park, Okanogan-Wenatchee especially so.

See you on the trails! Not even kidding about that. I'll cover pretty much the entire park (including the recreation areas) between June and August.

Very nice as anyone would expect, but too many people and a little more developed. Was lucky to know some people who worked at the park and checked out some much lesser known spots and trails, and that was serene. Was very sad seeing so many people just blatantly littering on the trails. Saw a Chinese dude literally chuck an empty Gatorade bottle off a trail and into a ravine. Judging by the trash, it's pretty common practice

The best park by far. Not a ton of people, and great scenery. That park was what sealed the deal for me to get back into being /out/ and enjoying nature. Broke in some boots on a 15 mi hike, but it was fun as hell.

Big bend was the first np i made into a destination vacation so it has a special place in my heart. At least during wintertime, i fell in love with the desert there. I will be back some time, but it really is a pain to get to from Wisconsin.

I would also like to hit guadeloupe mountain and the sights in New Mexico, but that starts to be a lot of driving for a one-week vacation. Crossing Texas takes a long ass time!

Places don’t always stay remote sadly. Glacier was one of the most remote parks in the country until they built a fucking airport in Kalispell in the 70s which dramatically increased park attendance.

And plan to go to Rocky Mountain soon since my current job is about 3hrs away. I wanted to go to Redwoods and Lassen back when I worked near Crater Lake but I'm an idiot who never made the trip. Plus it was winter, so most of Lassen was closed up.

>Favorites
Guadalupe Mountains, hiking-specific paradise, blends into Carlsbad but I prefer the Guadalupe section. Will almost never see another person outside of Guadalupe Peak and Devil's Hall.
White Sands for sheer uniqueness of the sights, plus dunes are fun.
Death Valley for vast emptiness. I love that feeling
Crater Lake for variety and views. There's so much shit to do there and it always looks nice.
Canyonlands just feels like a vaster, more interesting version of Arches with nicer views and less crowds.
Great Sand Dunes, fuck you I love sandboarding. I'll just wander in one direction all day climbing up dunes and boarding down them. It also just looks great there as well. Sangre De Cristos are one of the most aesthetic ranges in the country.

Them and state biologists. I had a job that dealt with a lot of state collaborators giving us data and it was universally terrible. For every data sheet they gave me, I had to do at least 15 minutes of clean up to make it usable. One guy just gave me a blank sheet and was like "I didn't see any beetles." Thanks asshole.
