For example, the survival wire saw originated because spies needed a lightweight saw that could be easily hidden up someone's ass.
A wire saw sucks as a general use saw. But it's fantastic if all you have are the contents of your pockets or prison wallet. You can fit a ferro rod, tinder, tiny knife, and a wire saw in an Altoids tin without issue.
Now, for regular camping/backpacking you can get away without one. They provide no benefits over a regular folding saw and in fact I'd rather take a Coghlan's Pocket Sierra Saw over a wire saw.
