I'm not sure why I thought it was the tallest, only have heard Mt. Rainier constantly mentioned.

Also I never learned the fact that the lowest point in the US and the highest point in the US were only 60 miles apart.
You would think that would have been a "fun fact" that would be endlessly brought up, but I literally have never heard anyone talk about it.

The uplifted coastal ranges, inland ranges and the Rockies formed at different times (though there was some overlapping periods) and elevations but eroded at just the right rates to make them pretty close to each other in elevation after all this time. The volcanic ones also formed at different times but still eroded enough or suffered an eruption or landslide event in time to be at similar elevations to some of the uplifted ranges now. 200k years ago the highest peak in the lower 48 would've probably been in Arizona (San Francisco peaks volcano ~16k ft before blowing) or Washington tied with Rainiers old height of about ~16k ft, go back millions of years (but still in North America, 30-50 mya) and the CO Rockies and part of the Colorado plateau were probably about as high as the Tibet plateau 15k-20k ft before eroding away to their present form and height. Kinda crazy how close in elevation the Sierras, CO Rockies, and Rainier are now.
