I dug my first Dakota Fire Hole the other day. Ignore the sticks. Is it deep enough? That trowel is about 27cm for reference.

It's not reliant on wind flowing through, a dakota firehole is basically a rocket stove. When the wood burns in the primary hole the heated air goes up creating suction from the other end

Hard to tell, but it should be at least a foot deep and you should be able to fist it from the side hole. If you make it too big then the coals will start to pile up, so make it deep. Also, pile the dirt on one side so it creates a blind. The purpose is to block light and give yourself a little wind break. It should look like a pit to hell when you're done.
