What is your preferred sleeping method for tarp camping?

I've bought a few different mats but it still feels like I'm sleeping on the ground. I swear I think I'm going to have to take the futon pill & buy a big heavy futon mattress.

It all comes down to site selection if you're going to use a foam pad. You want to pick a site that has a lot of duff. It will act as insulation and cushion. Personally I use a neo air xlite and I bring a torso length 3/8 foam pad as a sit pad and as a back up incase the inflatable fails.

If you want to make camp safer, store all toiletries and food 200ft away from camp, preferably hung in a bear bag. It needs to be 4m high and 1.5m away from the tree trunk to stop adult black bears iirc (as long as they don't bite your rope down).

I usually string up perimeter wire with empty bean cans with some rocks, like the alarms of old.

If I hear rattling it wakes me up, and then I shoot any bears or meth heads sneaking into the camp.

I have a one person and a two person tent as well as a hammock. I got into tarp camping this year just to try something new and expand my skill set. I've learned a lot and I've been enjoying it. However, when the bugs start to get real bad I may go back to a tent. I got mobbed by black flies the other day and if I had a tent with me I may have set it up at lunch just for a break from the lil buggers.

sort of. ticks are always a danger but unless you're specifically in the weeds so to speak I wouldn't feel any more in danger than standing there. A bug bivy might be worth investing in for the warm months if the creepy-crawlies bother you.
