It wasn't bad in the beginning, the last year or two the quality really dropped. There's a lot more of "I want to run away" threads and gearfaggotry (shopping addicted larpers) than before. Other than the homegrown and fishing generals it seems like tourists here to argue for some reason.

In fact, its what i would prefer.
i am not interested in most knife threads so i would never open a general.
But often a specific question about a certain kind of knife might interest me or i might have the answer someone is looking for

I hate the whole 'this board used to be good' sentiment as it's often based on nothing. Most of 4chan is pretty trash and always has been, just people seem to grow out of/get bored of the shit posting and mistake this for the quality of the board dropping off.
However, /out/ is getting way more low effort shit posting than it did a year or two ago. What's worse is people seem to be handing out easy (you)s to the most obvious bait and trolling. Whether it's the same group of people doing both the trolling and responding I don't know. But it all smells of people who are pretty new to 4chan and just looking for somewhere to vent their frustration in the form of le edgey shit posting.
Either way I still like to come here from time to time and there is still some decent stuff posted.

Just to add to this, I don't know if it's just me, but the board seems to be much faster than it used to? And the increase in posting seems to have come at the same time as the low effort posts. Which in my mind smells of people who don't go /out/ that much.

because a board filled with threads with <15 posts is a shitty board, like /mu/ or /his/. A thread that doesn't get to >40 posts is a failure. On a fast board, it is less of a problem if people start shitty threads, but on a slow board, they bump off good threads and linger way too long.
/out/ is more like an old school forum than classic 4chan, which was killed by the very cancer you propose
