i see occasional geologists in the jobs threads. I’m not one but I’ve been learning the geologic history of my area, and reading pic book. its pretty great and if you can find a copy its a good way to tour the davis mountains; it basically explains what each visual feature or ridge or peak you see from the highways is and how it formed and all that

Yeah that's actually one of the reasons I wanted to start this thread. I graduated with a geology degree last year and now that things are opening up again I'm looking to move out of my state. I'm trying to go for mining, or anything that does field work.

well its too late for this summer but a bunch of park systems (like the national park service) hire seasonal geologists. not a secure job or anything but would be neat to do geology at a remote mountain west national park for the summer

Here's a good one that goes into detail about basically everything you want to know about gemstones. Its got full color illustrations too. Chemical comp, cleavage, color, hardness, its all there. Really great book if you can find it.

does this include identification in the field of gems? pretty sure all i find are rocks, but i fantasize about finding real gemstones while exploring out. All o ever find are opal and obsidian.

Most practical geology jobs are either in hydrological or oil industries. If you really wanna look at rocks you gotta become a researcher.

Mining is there and its a big industry but there's not as much demand for geologists as compared to hydrology/oil industries.

I am an exploration geologist who is currently posting with the satellite internet of the project where I am working. Every now and then I go in / out / to laugh at the glampers or watch the oldfags' discussions. sometimes there is something interesting that I can take to the field. the project is for low sulphidation epithermal gold. although at the moment I am swallowing dust from the soil sampling. Most of the rocks in some projects are made shit by hydrothermal alteration or geological faults, ironically we want to see that kind of shit before "nice" rock formations or landscapes, because that is where the values are. Mineral exploration is detective work which is very well paid when metal prices are high.

You can find a job in the mining industry if you look, but geologist just aren't in as much demand there as they are in other areas, and most of the people they are looking for are geologist who already have experience working in mines and such. My advice, take the jobs you can get until you've got a bit more experience.

Environmental stuff is probably a broader field that's easier to get started in (site remediation etc.) but will usually mean you're working in town. I do groundwater exploration and get to roam around the woods in New England and NY to find clean drinking water.

If you want an /out/ geology job I'd recommend bulking up on your hydrology/sedimentology/soils classification

I'm in Canuckistan, but all the geologists and mining engineers I went to school with are working for resource companies in Northern Ontario, interior British Columbia, and Alberta. Some pretty prime places to be outdoors.

I'm trying for a B.Sci in Geology, and have an internship for a gold mine this summer. I kind of hate school - how much of your schooling do you reckon was very important? I dont have any interest for a Masters or Ph.D at this point. It's just irking me - I'd rather go back to work than sit in school, especially during COVID.

Well I can't really tell you myself, but for a gold mine I can imagine mineralogy, structure, and petrography being important. I'm still looking for a geo job myself. Until I find one I'll be stuck at my shitty factory job. Starting to think about going back to school to see if I can turn my B.A. into a B.S. Igneous Petrologist here. Staying blessed and keeping busy. Geology is cool. Still some good boomers around that aren't pozzed. AGU and GSA are fucked and filled with trannies and pronouns. Not really a total meritocracy anymore but if you are good there is nothing that fakers can do about it.
