If you actively hunt elephants, a herbivore on an open savannha, it's quite different to going for hike with a huge-ass gun and a vastly powerful and fast apex predator sneaks up on you in close vegetation.

Not the OP, it's obvious you don't/out/ with a rifle. Also, elephants don't spent all their time in open plains, plenty attacks happen in dense jungle, people shot them plenty of times. Same goes with bear, tiger, plenty other large animals.

I'm not saying it would be impossible to hunt megafauna. I'm saying that an average hiker would stand little chance with a weapon practical enougth to carry "just in case" against a predator in close country which requires a precise shot to the brain-pan to reliably stop dead.

I think they would have mostly the same shot as people do now, "megafauna" might seem impressive but mammoth, dire wolves, and short faced bears were not that much bigger than modern species

Not really. Elephants, kodiak and polar bears, been dropped pretty easy with out a head shot. These animals actually go down pretty easy. I'm more than fine going I to brown bear territory with a .44 lever gat, with a hot load, itll easily drop one.

Not him but I think you are being a bit to flippant about the difficulty of bringing down large game. Even the best among us at hunting eventually met their end in a lions claws or under an elephant.
It's not impossible but you need a lot of practice, decent equipment, and most importantly luck.
