Not OP but I have one of those knives in the OP pic and I like being able to casually carry it around in my pocket and not have a fixed blade taking up twice as much space and making me look like some weirdo survivalist or wannabe badass that needs to have a potential weapon on display on his person at all times.

Yes. The action is more vulnerable to gunk and dirt than other types of deployment. Same for knives with ball bearings. Go with a thumb stud knife with washers for an /out/ folder. There's tons of them. If you're in a humid environment, then look into the more stainless options as well.

I recommend just getting a stainless Mora fixed blade though.

i have an automatic i got in the army over 10 years ago. it is gerber, the blade is s30 and the body is aluminum. it is my beater knife i use it for everything because i don't really like the blade shape, i think it too bulky and it was free. so i use it for literally everything trying to break it. it has lasted over 10 years and other than a few cosmetic scratches it is fine.

so listen to these fags if you want. but my army issue auto just won't fucking quit. it is a little heavier than the knife i actually take backpacking though, but i don't really use a knife much on longer hikes. i use a knife a lot more when im just fucking around doing bushcraft stuff.
