I would've been a lot more motivated to learn all the knots they taught if I had a chance to apply that knowledge on adventurous outings.
It's similar to being required to learn Spanish in high school if you don't live anywhere near the Mexican border and don't have the funds to travel to Latin America as a 14/15/16/17 year-old. Where is the motivation to learn verb conjugations going to come from for someone in that situation? I mean, beyond just memorizing enough to pass the course?

I led a trek at Philmont my last summer as a scout. Once you're on the trail without your guide it quickly becomes a surreal experience. My favorite part was walking our donkey that was with us for a few days. The pic is of Mt. Baldy which we summitted while there, and it was a great time. Overall, probably the best camping trip I've done and definitely the best nature I've come across.

Also, were you there pre or post Ute Fire (2018)? I've heard a lot of stuff is destroyed, like the buildings in the backcountry and a lot of the trails. I'm on staff, so we are mandated to help with repairs on work details. Guess I won't know until I see it for myself.

I was there post Ute Fire. I did not see too much of the burned areas but I do think that it may have been some of the more pristine land towards the north that burned, just based on the landscape we passed through close to that area. Really sad stuff, but they seemed to be clearing more trees in large sections to prevent that from happening to that level again.

I was never at Philmont, some guys in my troop went and loved it. We had WW2 and Vietnam dads who helped out. Did a lot of winter camping and backpacking. We had a dad from the 10th Mountain Division teach us how to climb and repel. Philmont is a whole other level. So is the thing down in the Keys.

We had a dads who built patrol mess cabinets with legs and full cook kits, a dad had a motorcoach company and we did one trip a year in a bus. There was a retired guy who had no son active in scouts when I was in but he help the troop and he was the nicest guy. Gave me a Case knife when I made Eagle. We had tents for camping and some for back packing . We camped year round, even the dead of winter. Older scouts taught the younger ones how to survive, build fires, how to pack a backpack, how to keep your boots waterproof and unfrozen. Years later, I'd run into guys from my troop when I went back home. Solid guys.

Holy shit that camp and uniforms and tents and scouts got cleaned up fast!. Good times! Summer camp is timeless in that way. My troop had a strict no phones policy, made sure all us zoomers had to live the experience for real. That was thanks to our old-timer Scoutmaster, guy got his eagle in the 70s I recall

MacLaren river lodge. one of the guys in my troop knew someone who worked there so we planned it in like 4 weeks. stayed near the lodge for like 3 days. took a jet boat up the river to the glacier and camped there for 3 days. also stayed near denali for a day.
