Going on a roadtrip soon. Thinking about using these with a tent instead of motels.

It’s fine if you’re looking for a place to grab a shower, use a bathroom, do laundry, etc. If the choice is a motel or a KOA, then a KOA is a fine option to save $50 a night compared to a motel/hotel.

KOAs are usually well kept, have showers, laundry and other facilities. They're near major roads and they're cheap. So they're a good option. I'd honestly rather sleep in my tent at a KOA than on a filthy mattress in a cheap hotel.

They are really great for a true outdoor adventure experience. They have swimming pools, mini-golf courses, game rooms with billiards and arcade games, bowling alleys, movie rooms, etc. everything you could possibly want for your outdoor adventure. Go for it anon!

Just sleep at highway rest stops and hit parks in the day. Koa like every few days to clean up. Army Corp of engineer camp sites are nice and cheap...normally around lakes/rivers with dams.

I was always told Ontario was great but it is all private property and highway robbery national or provincial parks. SK and MB are pretty much ass too. AB and BC are the only good /out/ places in canuckistan

They're nice when you haven't got a plan and just want to pull in somewhere for the night, sleep, then get up and go the next morning. Cheap too. I drove across the country and I was always within like an hour of a KOA.

There's still very significant state and federal park land in the East for camping it's just not under the jurisdiction of BLM. The only reason people suggest BLM land is because it's free. There is no park service or designated campgrounds in BLM. The government just owns the land and doesn't really do much with it. It's basically empty land people use for gun ranges, camping, motor vehicle sports, and sometimes ranchers pay the government some money for grazing rights on the land. In the East if you camp you're always going to be on a private campground or a state or federal campground and you'll pay fees unless you're willing to go some distance from the paid campgrounds.

There’s plenty of national forest and state owned land in the east to freely camp at, with both dispersed camping options and free campsites and shelters. It’s just not BLM land - it’s national forest (or state land like the Adirondacks or Baxter)

Pretty much this. Just check first because a lot of them are as expensive as motels now. Theyre mostly tailored to boomer tour bus RVers. And a lot of them are in fucking urban areas. But they do have better services than real campgrounds especially for someone who's really just road tripping. Pretty much perfect for that scenario. For real /out/ing, not so much.

I actually did this. Not a bad option. Like others said, there amenities like shower and laundry. But do plan ahead. Figure out how many miles of driving you plan on doing and book a spot around that area. Spaces aren't guaranteed. Alternatively, look out for major truck stops (Loves, T/A, etc). You can sleep in your car overnight and if you get their rewards program, you can get a free shower after so many gallons of purchased fuel

Just make sure you get a tent site. KOAs used to be camp sites in the 90s. These days they're 95% RV sites and, if you don't get a tent-only site, you can end up on gravel. It's not pleasant.

koa's are just slummier motel 6's. society adjacent blm often has tweakers, bring a gun. state/national campgrounds are a good middle ground. rangers around, usually bathrooms/running water and they cost 20 dollars instead of koa's 45 dollar a night bullshit. don't go to koa's.

KOA should be a last resort, or a stop if you want to shower/do laundry in something other than a stream.

I made it from Florida to California and back in a car and only paid for three rooms, just get a public lands app and dispersed camp on BLM/USFS land, its 100% legal
