Do you use trekking poles while mountain climbing?

I'm climbing Mt. Shasta and trying to decide whether I should do this.

Is Mt Shasta technical, where you'll be using an ice axe and crampons? If so, then I'd leave them home so you wouldn't have to stow them. If not, then I'd bring them.

Just make a nice walking stick, takes 5 minutes and it's free
Hell you can probably make nice walking stick in 10 seconds if you get lucky and find a nice piece

Trekking poles are lighter and work better on level snow fields. Also, good luck finding a suitable stick among the krumholz.

Finding a stick that's already the perfect length, girth, strength, and etc. is like me finding the perfect woman. Easier said than done. You undoubtedly have to result to making one yourself.

Tbqh trekking poles are a worthy investment. Just go to REI, if you out enough one is bound to get fucked up and just return it, or return it before the yearly cut off ends.

You need to find the right wood and it has to be dry. This can take longer than 5 minutes.

I spend easily a few thousand a year just on high-end trekking poles. Literally impossible to walk without them these days.

Just climbed north pack monadnock and camped in a valley on the other side. Not very high, but quite sketchy at points. I would have been seriously fucked without a pole, it was very wet and slippery.

Interesting. I've hiked mt monadnock, but I didn't know about this 50 mile trail. I'll try to convince some friends to hit it with me.

This will be my first time hiking it. I've hiked Monadnock and most of the trails in that area, but never got around to doing the greenway. I planned on hiking it end to end, but I'm going solo and don't want to pay $180 for a ride to Mt Sunapee. I'm probably just going to hike from Monadnock to Washington township, grab a burger at the general store and head back. That would be a 64 mile hike if this ends up being the case. Who knows? Maybe I'll meet someone on trail, find a ride while I'm out or just decide to hike to Sunapee and pay the ridiculous amount for a ride back to my car. Either way it's all good. I'll be happy to simply have a week on trail no matter how it plays out. All is well.

Sounds like a great time. Have fun and make sure to use lots of permethrin. The ticks this year got an early start breeding. Not too thick on north pack, but down where I live it is like a plague already.

One pole is nice for the initial ascent/final descent and especially around the talus fields. Make sure it can fit in/on your pack, it's not worth lugging it in your hand once you reach ice.
Have fun, Shasta is a magical mountain and still one of my favorites.

Good to know. It's supposed to dip into the low 30's at night so I debated going without the permethrin, but I ended up treating everything yesterday. After reading your post I'm glad I did. Perfect! Thanks for the well wishes. I'll take some photos here and there and maybe post a trip report when I get back.
