If you're in the east, especially the southeast, you're getting a lot of humidity from the gulf that causes all the air and wood to swell with moisture.

But a hatchet and a hand axe are.
Well the hand axe is technically a pre-historic tool made of stone, but the same term is used for small hatchets.

I actually prefer batoning with a knife because you can hammer on the tip of the knife as it goes down. if your hatchet goes all the way into the log and it doesn't split it there's nothing to hit and you just have to start swinging the entire log around.

What's supposed to be wrong with batoning? It's what they taught us in the army and I've found it to be an efficient method. The only downside is the fact that it makes a lot of noise, which is a risk factor if you're attempting to remain undetected.

Depends. I would have frozen to death a number of times, or at least been a lot colder than I was, without a fire in the tent stove. Infrared signature from the stove can be minimized with correct campsite placement. Blue light and especially sound carry much farther in a dark forest.

Is a nata really less bulky than something like a Fiskars X5?
Although I completely understand the appeal of a long blade that has multiple uses, I carry a cheap billhook when I decide to do "guerrilla" trail maintenance on trails around town. Also works nicely to split small stuff.
An hatchet has a much more specific use and is shit to clear brush with.
