I get it op. Every time I go to the woods it feels great for the first few hours, but then I always end up somewhat depressed and lonely. I love the outdoors, and really'd like to be one of those guys that feels right and comfy in the wild. I do think you can work on it though. It's something about getting in the right state of mind and adjusting to natures rythme.

Well, I guess it depends on my state of mind. I can enjoy the solitude... but at the time when I went hiking it had been a really isolating summer (the only friends/acquaintances I really have are at my university, and in my hometown I just have one buddy). If I had a more active social life otherwise I'd probably find it really cathartic to go to the mountains alone.

Exactly. Weirdly, it's kind of like smoking weed for me. If I'm in a bad place mentally, I'm going to get paranoid and ultra-self aware and have a shitty time with weed. And since my social life is shitty, being so totally alone will get these negative thoughts to overwhelm me.

I had similar problems when camping/hiking alone, after I got all camp done I got very depressed and missing my gf, taking dog with me wasn't relief at all
this is what I've done: started doing bushcraft all day walks without staying overnight and signed into college hiking club to go out into mountains in large group few times a year

I'm antisocial, and I really enjoy being alone in the wilderness. A few days of solitude is pleasing.

My mental state did start to decay a little towards the end of a 6 week trip I took alone. I'm not sure if the cause was the fact that I hadn't had more than a dozen conversations in the last 5 weeks or the more challenging terrain.

I really want to do a solo trip this summer. I want to hike Northover Ridge, in Kananaskis, and no one will do it with me. I'm worried it is too dangerous to do alone, though.

That does make sense. I often go for small hikes when I can't stand sitting on my ass doing meaningless shit on the computer no more, or else when I feel somewhat depressed by my life. So I go back to the source and hope that nature will comfort me somehow. But as you said, shit just gets worse and I should deal with them before going for hikes. That being said, I did have some fantastic times in the wild to.

Join a Sierra Club, Venture Crew, or some other outdoor enthusiast org nearby. I guarantee there is something close enough. Then you automatically have dozens of people that share a passion with you. It's as close to automatic as making new friends gets.

I also don't trust my non existent survival skills much, so that's limiting. I think having someone to double-check my decisions would be helpful.

This guy is right. I grew up living in a suburban town that had no vegetation aside from a sizeable strip of woods running alongside a river and some railroad tracks. Those woods are where I first smoked weed, first dropped acid - hell, I lost my virginity in those woods. But I never really appreciated them until I saw them under the influence of drugs. I've recently adopted the practice of doing drugs in nature and it's honestly amazing. A sunrise away from the city is beautiful on its own, but a woodland sunrise with a psychedelic flair... It's simply indescribable. If you love nature, you should try seeing nature under the influence of a psychedelic. It'll change your life.

I actually heard a story from lereddot where these guys were on shrooms with a friend and went climbing up a mountain some place out west. The friend was sort of in a bad place mentally and ended up just fucking throwing himself off a cliff.

But it's not like I would get real lonely. You could always try going out for day trips. Just make sure people know where you are generally and what not.

I've had a lot of fun just clambering around forest service land and climbing the highest hills and mountains around near where I live just because they are there.

(small mountains, but still, that's reasonable for a day.)

The odds aren't bad. I've known lots of people who did. My Grandfather was kind of obnoxious but he found my Grandmother, and both of them fucking loved hiking.

I don't think they took their dogs along much because they did hiking that involved climbing a dog can't really do on the Pacific Crest trail, but neither of them were necessarily the most socially competent people and yet they got married. She was just plain inept and shy, and he was a loud, obnoxious jackass.

I have an INTP mate, and he is hesitant around new people. Opens up when he knows them well enough to know how they work and the best way to interact with them. You just need 1 close friend basically. Beer always helps.

I have friends that are cool with hiking but only on specific trails and purely for the exercise. They get pissy if I want to explore a new route or stop and do something boring like plant identification. They also enjoy camping but only in those kind of crowded camping areas. Thinking about getting a dog to go with that won't complain about how long it takes or if I want to stop to smell the roses a bit.
