I've never heard that before, but they are somewhat similar I guess. I have never actually read into Yosemite. There are plenty of granite/chert cliffs here. A lot of cool little critters like salamanders. I would say it is unique in a sense, but I don't travel much, so I'll leave that to your own judgement.

Question to anybody: is rifle open carry on trails like Old Rag and Monongahela Forrest good to go? What about target shooting (following the blm land shooting rules ofc). It’s a 9000sc but I chose it cause it looked like the 5000 but has the modern 5 year always on life, and yeah you can shoot in the forest and Oc just follow the rules and make sure you’re shooting into a natural berm and not nigging trees and or bodies of water. I’m still working on an easier method of a portable target stand myself but I’ve been to Dolly sods twice to shoot. Expect to see people especially this time of year and expect they’re probably going to hate your guts cause they’re Patagonia wearing homosexuals but otherwise it is really a fucking comfy trip. Hopefully the next time I go I will have a suppressor and some NVG.

How was the wildlife trail? Seems like you did rohrbaugh cliffs overlooking red creek gorge which I am planning to do myself this year the preferred route I believe is out and back along the fisher spring trail but seems like you could come back on wildlife trail as well. when we went it wasn’t so bad but there were several mud patches on the first 2 miles or so. After that it clears up and when you get to what iirc is Lindy’s point it’s not muddy at all and there’s lots of cool sights and some tucked away spots by the overlook one could camp. It did rain the last day we were there and that quickly turns it all into mud and muck.

Northern is pretty broad given the shape of the state but if you‘re in the West part Swallow Falls followed by Dans Rock are local favorites for day hiking

Assuming you mean east, I just went to gilpins falls. Make sure you DONT cross the covered bridge (or if you do circle back) to connect with the trail. Don't make the same mistake I did and be stuck following the penstock green pipe thing.

The trail is right next to the parking area slightly south of the creek.

It is marked on Google maps as gilpins covered bridge.

Right near swallow falls there is a rock maze (its on alltrails) if you want something else to do and there's plenty of trails in the state forests nearby as well if you are looking for more mileage.

If you do swallow falls state park on a weekend I'd recommend getting there early, it gets crowded.

There's one like that where you can hike to a view.

I've only heard good things about lake moomaw on here, but yeah the ones that are wildlife management areas are generally the least crowded, but trails may not lead to views or anything nice and be iffy in condition if at all.

Oh this isn't nearby to that but outside of Abingdon to the SW there

there's some trails near brumley moutain

the most popular is this to a view and a rock maze:

the waterfall trail starts at the lake, you walk upstream along little brumley creek, looks like an interesting slot canyon

I don’t recall seeing a permit required last time I looked at it. Could be possible, there a few spots in Virginia where you need $10-20 permit for a primitive campsite.
Big thanks for the recs. My wife has been asking me to do a lake/swimming backpacking overnight instead of just hauling ass up mountains.

They have a plethora of hiking opportunities and not very good food options. Yet most people in the state were overweight when I visited a couple months ago.

Compare this to Chicago where lots of awesome food options exist like world class pizza, Vienna dogs, Italian beef, cheese curds and very few options for hiking. Your options for exercise are sterile gyms with meatheads and crowded roads with drivers who will run you over. Also it's cold for half of the year unlike W. Virginia which is more southern in latitude.

West Virginia should be one of the fittest states in the country like an east coast version of Colorado yet it's not. How come?

If I've done 10 mile hikes before with no issues, and 7.5 multiple days in a row, can I do a 20 mile day? I've never had an issue with sore feet/knees, I want to do 20 miles just to see if I can do it. I'd do a 10 mile loop I've done before, twice. so I'll know the terrain

I know there's a fuckload of regulations about distances between water sources, other campers, no ground fires, etc.
But because of fucking corona several campsites are closed. Last time my dad took me to crater lake when I was a kid, the ranger gave us shit about where we set up camp, even though we were about 150m away from the lake. How can I avoid this happening when I get there?
