We do little hikes during the day, at multiple places often, and it adds up. If you are too sore to walk much, appalachia doesn't quite hold as much appeal.
I am not looking to backpack or hike very long distances, just experience a bunch of different areas of different types, views, waterfalls, bogs, tunnels, rivers.
Northern Midwest is simply too far. There is SO MUCH here, state parks, state forests, national forests, I can do a different trail every trip basically. There's thousands of different trails and parks here just in central appalachia alone and I have no desire to fly or drive all day.
I get it, most people here want to camp and backpack and do long distance trails, but that isn't me.
I like the idea of exploring local areas that are not national destinations.
