Best thing I've found is to use an abrasive to clean it off. When I'm by the river, I'll grab a couple handfuls of coarse wet sand and scrub all over and then rinse, that seems to do the trick. If it's still sooty when I get home I take a cup of baking soda and add just enough water to make a gritty paste, and rub that in before rinsing. Works very well; will still leave some black marks behind but removes all the soot that would otherwise transfer to everything else it touches. Could use steel wool if I wanted to get it back to looking brand new, but I kind of like how it looks like it was cooked over an open fire.
