>>2163559>They can be pests Ours are a pest because they’re introduced, breed like rabbits, and fuck up native bird habitats.
They’re trying to completely eradicate them, and doing pretty well.
Shooting, trapping, and more recently they’ve got (tot from people) a disease unimaginatively called Wobbly Possum. Fucks with their brains, vision and digestion if I recall correctly, so they’re unsteady on their feet, can’t see at night, and spend all day looking for food because they’re not getting the nutrients from a normal size meal. It’s a double edged sword though - it kills them, but they’re destructive as hell in their final days.
It’s a shame really, they’re nice little guys, but they don’t belong here.
People here usually get pet ones from shooting the mother or hitting them in their car (national sport here to rugby).
They’re pretty cool when young. You just tuck them inside your jacket and go about your day. Probably getting pissed on a bit ha ha they love apples n cinnamon.
Hard to keep them safe from cats and dogs without a good size enclosure though. Some people have them in the house, but they’re a bit smelly.
Here’s a possum adoption success story, about 2min
