I was to go innawoods but I’m so afraid of bears and animals in general that it’s unreal.
How often do you actually run into other living things that can hurt you in nature?

I often put on a bear costume and then assault hikers. You can get away with it because the cops are always looking for a bear after the crime is reported, they're never looking for a guy with a bear costume folded up in the trunk his car.

Literally never. I have seen scat of animals that could hurt me while hiking, though. I think they realize that humans are apex predators. Bears and moose will still kill the fuck out of you, though. I carry a handgun just in case.

I suspect you're more likely to run into a deranged fellow human than a wild animal, given you probably have limited outdoor experiences and won't be going very deep for a while. Eventually you will learn to be at peace with other life and cease to fear them.

Don't worry about bears, we're.... uh... they are a friendly creature and will be as sweet as apple pie if you bring hamburgers with you to share. (Also bring apple pie when you come over, btw) Perhaps even beer may be ok since bears get more cuddly and cute the drunker they become.

I live in Seattle and go /out/ all the time. I've run into bears on a number of occasions but they really don't want anything to do with people. The most you'll ever see of them is their ass as they run into the bushes to get away from you.

The only time I ever felt like I was in danger was when I got charged multiple times by a big horned sheep about 5 seconds after taking this picture because I got too close. I actually legitimately thought I might die. He chased me down a 100+foot embankment into a ravine and only backed off when I started throwing football sized rocks at him as a last resort. Kek.

Moral of the story is don't fuck with animals and they won't fuck with you.

This literally isn't actual advice.
If a actual black bear attacks you it is definitely wise to fight back because they have a tendency to be predatory. Also, It's pretty common to see brown black bears, especially in Grizzly/Brown Bear territory.

Playing dead in a Grizzly attack should only be a last resort and it's not something to do preemptively because they have a history of false charging and are also territory.

Basically just shoot a predator you see them demonstrate aggressive behavior. It's more likely that they will just fuck off without a shot, and if they are hunting you, the attack will likely be from behind. You just have to rely on instinct, training, and luck. For a moose you are better off dropping to the ground and covering your head, I think. They will only attack if they feel you are a threat.

Also, a handgun can work, but it is a difficult shot. You need to hit their brain, or hit them enough to trigger a flight response. The latter is never guaranteed.

I've been hiking, camping, backpacking etc all my life in the pacific states, much of it solo. I've only seen bears 3 times. They never did anything threatening or bothered me at all—on two encounters, the bear was too far away to see me, and on the third, it bolted as soon as it saw me. The most trouble i ever got from any animal was a semi-territorial mountain goat up in WA. Just don't be stupid and keep food in your tent or something. Get a bear can, put smelly shit in it, leave it a hundred yards from your tent, you'll be fine.
