I work in footwear retail. Danner is pretty much the only boot I wear. Some of there domestic stuff is overpriced for what it is but that’s due to gov regulation (berry compliance). Stay away from the stitch downs if you want something you can put a dozen plus miles a day on (unless you’re packing out an elk on steep grades).

I bought a pair of Explorer 650s a few years back and I still wear them when I go for hikes. They used to be my everyday boot since I found them so comfortable but I've since replaced them with a pair of Iron Rangers.

If you want a boot that will last a decade with resoles, get a stitch down. If you want a boot that’s half the weight and will last 1-3 years of heavy use, get an imported direct attach danner like the fullbore or mountain 600. From what I’ve gathered in 3 years of retail heavy duty(leo/construction) footwear; unless it’s resole-able, 6 months for a sneaker/tennis shoes and 12 for a boot. With daily wear of course.

I got a pair of chippewa boots because the shop I got it from said they would resole them for free. I like them. 2 years old and just regular scrapes and gouges. Nothing to compain about thus far.

Lowa Tibet GTX High if you have narrow feet and don't need corks.

Hoffman Armor Pro if you do need corks or have wide feet (you can order them without the corks).

Whites and other traditional looking boots are only really good for fire where that style is required.I think Lowas are allowed out on the line but I've heard from co-workers that they have a tendency to melt sometimes.

I purchased a pair of Mountain 600's and instantly noticed the right foot was tighter no matter how I laced it so I returned them and the identical pair I exchanged them for was the opposite with the left foot.

For the price, I expected a little bit better quality control and just returned them for my money back.

Thanks, I'll watch for that.

I have an odd way of breaking in boots. I will walk on my treadmill wearing them. I can stop and change socks or insoles if they don't feel right. After a few time doing this I can go out and have a good idea what insoles and socks are going to work for me.

Danner's are a scam. If you need it welted, get Jim Green (South Africa) and use an insole for comfort or Limmer Boots (non custom made in Germany by Meindl)
