Personally I really like tarp camping in the spring and fall when the bugs aren't out. If I don't need a bug net then it's nice to just carry a tarp. Tarps are also nice if you're on a trail with a bunch of shelters and plan on using them. Unfortunately all good things come to an end and I'm back in my tent. There were so many black flies trying to get in it last night it sounded like it was raining.

slingfin splitwing is very light and convenient being a shaped tarp, of with all the adds a tarp tent and only goes up one way. If you don't mind it, a square tarp gives you a few more options for shelter and is probably a little cheaper (assuming just the tarp). If you don't mind the weight to experiment a DD 3x3 tarp would do it.

a 'tarp tent' is a shelter which needs to be staked out to stand, vs say a 2 pole dome tent. While making a tarp shelter out of a flat tarp is a 'tent' I would say most people refer to tarp tents as a shaped tarp, which only go up a specific way(s) and which come with some accoutrements like a zippered entrance, built in vents, hooks inside for a bivy or mesh inner.
