I hate when they swallow the hook brehs. I use an eagle claw and I even filed all the barbs off so now I end up losing about 25% of the fish I hook but it beats having to do fish surgery to get it out and sometimes killing them. Just last night a bass swallowed my lure and I spend like 10 min trying to get it out. I managed to get 2 of the three hooks our of him (thankfully I had a pair of needle nose pliers for this exact reason) but I just couldn't get the third without shoving the hook deeper into his mouth. He flopped out of my hands and when I picked him back up he had unhooked himself! Bastards a better surgeon than me I guess

Don’t care because I own a few acres of ponds and a local stream runs through my property so I feed them bread and old chicken and Turkey carcasses and feed the stocked pond proper fish food so whenever I wanna go back there and hook a few suckers I don’t feel a damn thing they’re all healthy and well fed they can chill for a week until the hook wound heals.

Plus if they ever swallow the hook or piss me or I’ll chop their heads off and pan fry them with okra and feed the head to the local ducks.

I used to fish with minnows quite a bit, but ever since I learned fish actually do experience pain I have stopped using them. I still fish, but only with leeches, worms, or fakebait. Like, imagine someone impaling a metal hook through your spine or neck... that would be more unpleasant than a hook going through your face.

I go fishing with the mindset of conquest. I'm terrified of everything that lives underwater and make it my personal duty to destroy as much as I can with my mouth, because I have a deep dark fear of everything aquatic that drives me to murder swimming animals and consume them with their heads on like a savage.

Catch and release is cruel though. They're still thinking/feeling creatures as dumb as they are. You're better off kayaking or swimming with them or just feeding trout etc from the shore rather than hauling them in and wrecking their mouths
