Hi everyone!

I recently got my driver's licence and I've always wanted to get into surfing a kayaking. I'm trying to purchase a car with this in mind.

The resources I've come across so far seem unclear as to what vehicles I can mount roof racks on, or cars with a roof that can support that kind of weight.

Can anyone point me in the right direction, or offer any advice?

Surfboards weigh almost nothing, no car is going to be limited by what surfboard you can put on the roof.

Kayak weights vary a lot, depending on the size and material.Poly kayaks (plastic) are heavier than fibreglass, all other things being equal. Kevlar are light, similar to fibreglass. Carbon fibre are the lightest and most expensive. There are also ABS kayaks, with weight being slightly less than poly and slightly more than fibreglass..

We'd need more info on where you live and your budget to give you better advice, though.

Cars aren't ideal for hauling anything, a small crossover or actual SUV are best. Failing that, a truck.

picrel is my car and small kayak, if you just want a basic puddle jumper like Pelican then basically any car will haul it.

FYI you can find roof rack systems that work with 90% of the cars out there, check Yakima, THULE, and Rhino for the best systems.

Not applicable, I don't live in the US. Most of those cars aren't available.

Also I'm not really confident a years out of date sticky on 4chan is the right thing to refer to.

Get an old Landcruiser or a Hilux off Gumtree, I'm sure you can find one that already has a rack too.

you new here? There are some good boards on 4chan. /out/ used to be one of them.
/o/ helped me purchase my car with the older 2014 version of the sticky several years back.

lowest roof rating i seen is 75kg, most are between that and 150kg. i regulary see fiesta style cuckboxes with 2 kayaks on the roof.
you will quite literally be fine with any car, maybe awd for getting there and a wagon to sleep in.

This. But no Jeep for me though. Had an F150 and and grand Cherokee and the truck was way cheaper to maintain over the years. I’m a van guy though. I recommend a Mazda 5. Not the CX5 but a Mazda 5. They make racks for them too. Stopped making the in 2015. I have to sell mine for something bigger that can fit bikes. Clearance would be the issue because it rides low. Depending on how /out/ you plan on going. I drove all over Alabama hills by Mt Whitney with no issue. Car is perfect for a couples or single travel. You can sleep in it. Good gas mileage. I’m really going to miss mine.

Camry is great, but since everyone and their mom knows they're great, they tend to hold more value, and thus be more expensive on the used market
