Happy 50th thread everyone.
Feel free to post tobaccos (no weed allowed), pipes, collections, pics of favorite combos for going /out/, pics of what you're doing with your pipe and any questions you might have.
Want to get into smoking pipes without spending too much cash?
Get a Missouri Meerschaum Legend corncob pipe and a pouch of either Prince Albert, Carter Hall or Half and Half tobacco, available at most drugstores.
What you'll need: pipe, tobacco, lighter or matches, pipe cleaners, and either a regular old nail or a pipe tool (combination tamper, scoop, and small pick).
All of these together should run you less than $20.
Having trouble keeping your pipe lit? Fill it with less tobacco and smoke it slower than you think you need to, lightly tamping as needed when the smoke starts thinning out.
If you're still having trouble, try filling your pipe this way:

Anonymous
>>2125169 It's not. Perique can be made from any tobacco since it's the processing that matters. I don't recall offhand what particular varieties they generally use but I can assure you it is 100% not rustica.
Anonymous
>>2125444 >why do so many Savinellis take filters because yurops love their filters so they can smoke their candied danish tobaccos.
savinelli filters are the least objectionable filters though, they're just this little triangular chunk of balsa, the smoke flows around the sides and the balsa absorbs some of the moisture. they hardly affect the taste at all. and you can make your own with balsa from your local hobby shop.

I only use a filter with a few pipes that require it because otherwise I'd be sucking up tobacco. Filter gets changed after every smoke. I tried going back to back once with some of those Savinelli balsam filters and I could definetely taste the wet/stale/acidic used filter mixing in with the fresh tobacco. They're cheap and only two of my pipes need them, so I change frequently.
As far as non-aromatics, check out some of the Seattle Pipe Club stuff. If you can get a sampler with some Potlach in it that'd be good. It has a smokey-incense type sweetness to it.

I may go smoke at the local public park on a rainy day when it's empty and I can hide under an overpass bridge. Hopefully I don't get fined, but it's unlikely since there's never anyone there in the rain. I tried finding some good tree cover away from footpaths but I couldn't spot any good ones.

Found the followin in "Tobacco-Discussion" by J. B. Killebrew and William H. Glasson (1903): If time permitted, I might go on and tell how variant are the tastes and fancies of the different nations in the selection of the types of tobacco to be consumed by them. The Norwegians and Swedes, for instance, want the strongest tobacco grown, which they are said first to chew, then to smoke, and then to snuff the ashes. The Germans want the "black fats" and also a sweet tobacco, of fine stem and fibre, cherry red in color or mottled with yellow. It must be porous so as to take in the sauces with which it is treated in its manufacture. This is known in the American markets as the German saucer. The French requirements call for a milder red tobacco, or the White Burley types; the Italians want tobacco of a dark brown color, strong, smooth and silky in texture; the Austrians want a type of solid fine texture and glossy sheen, of uniform brown color, tough and stretchy ; the Spanish take the lowest grades of lugs and light types ; the English take many sorts, but one essential requirement is that they must be absorbent, strong and elastic in texture, that the tobacco may be spun into rope-like strands. The negroes of Africa take the longest tobacco that is shipped from America. This, they make into a large cigar, not less than twenty- six inches in length, soak it in lard or palm-oil and then the whole tribe sit in a circle and smoke until they become deliriously intoxicated. Nearly all foreign nations prefer tobacco cured by fire. The Americans prefer that cured without fire or smoke.

In "American Tobacco Types, Uses, and Markets" by Charles E. Gage from 1942 the author describes perique tobacco production on page 58-60 and directly follows it by describing rustica, which he states "is not used for human consumption in this country but only for manufacture into nicotine sulfate, insecticides, etc.". With this I conclude that perique is not rustica as perique was produced for human consumption in the US at the time. I also checked 10+ different sites online where they sell "Perique tobacco seeds", and whenever it was specified it said "Nicotiana Tabacum", not rustica. I would be very interested in seeing if you can find a source saying perique tobacco is rustica, though.

Also, if you smoke more outside than inside, then use that time for your Latakias, Orientals, and other "stinky" tobaccos. Aromatics are often more for others than yourself.
I say experiment. A lot of people associate the scents of cherry and apple tobaccos with what their grandfather smoked, from what I've heard where I am. But that also changes by region, it seems.
I'm partial to most not-cherry Captain Black blends. Lane 1Q is about the standard of entry-level aromatic, and is basically common enough that it's a familiar scent. I've never tried Sweet Killarney. But try it and find out, and try others as well. See what you like, what she likes indoors, and figure out together which tobaccos will be for back porch smokes, and which will be for inside only.

Got a Missouri born cob, the 'volcano' one that has a bit of red corn on the outside. It's nice for that, but it looks like they started to drill for the stem on the other side than where the stem is. I originally thought it was just a nick but its the same space where the stem would go. Needless to say, I don't like that. It was a 15$ corn cob, I would expect them not to give me essentially a damaged one. Makes me second guess if I want to get a Shire cobbit or skip over to a briar.

When Holmes made the transition to the big screen, the calabash came with him and it's been associated with his image ever since. Ditto the deerstalker cap and half-cape overcoat; Holmes, as a Victorian gentleman, only wore that outfit once in the books, while out in the countryside where such an outfit was appropriate to the weather and environment; he otherwise wore a suit and bowler hat. Again, the outfit was used when it wouldn't be socially appropriate to wear such a thing in the films, and it became part of Holmes' stereotypical appearance along with the calabash pipe.
Despite being hilariously huge, they actually don't hold as much tobacco as you would think. The bowl isn't much bigger than on a normal pipe, and the rest of the size is a combination of wall thickness from the gourd and a cooling chamber for the smoke.

So what to do with the other 99% of pipes that can’t be sold under a brand name?
They dump them onto the market at cost, pipe shops buy them for super cheap put them in basket on the counter by the cash register and pass the savings on to you.

Smoked a bowl of old dried out penzance earlier. Meant to smoke it last night but it was windy and raining outside. Wasn't too bad, got some real nice incense notes from it and some actual decent flavors other than just the overpowering waxiness of latakia. Doing this primarily to try to come to terms with the stuff, I used to like english blends way back then I got to where I couldn't stand them, going to just force myself to get used to them again so I can enjoy them in moderation since I've got a fair amount packed away. Later this afternoon, if it's not raining, I'm going to have some rattray's dark fragrant. Tried my first bowl the other day, it's okay I guess but felt incredibly light and I didn't get much from it, but I was smoking in a new clay and with all the wind it burned pretty hot. Going to smoke it in a nice big briar and see if I can get something more from it. Any of you ever get a tin and just smoke solely that tobacco straight through? I'm wondering if that might help understand a given tobacco better, since I tend to jump around and just smoke all sorts of different stuff, especially with these lighter blends since I think I've blunted my palate a bit with strong flakes.

>>2133575 Another idea I've heard is that your required number of pipes to form a rotation (R) depends on how many bowls you smoke a day (B). R=B+1. This provides a pipe with one day of rest per bowl smoked before you come back to it, so if you only smoke one bowl a day, you would, in theory, need only two pipes. I have many more than I need, but I also like to collect and display them because I think they're cool.

When you're first getting into pipes there's a tendency to want to try everything, but I don't know that it's really a good way to appreciate tobaccos. *everything* tastes good in small bites, but its very superficial, you only really get the dominant notes. as you smoke through a tin you really begin to pick up the subtleties. if you keep it in the tin and not a mason jar then it will also dry out slightly so you get a picture of how it smokes and tastes as it breathes, as it dries out a bit, etc.
when I first started I probably had 15-20 tins open, I had a "rotation" and would sample each one maybe once every 2-3 weeks. then I bought a 1 lb can of balkan sobranie (this was back when it was the real stuff, made by sobranie of london) and since it was such a big can I decided to smoke it "more often" which turned into "every single smoke". the first 50 or so bowls it seemed every bowl showed more complexity than the last. when it was empty I did the same thing to one of my other tins, same result. nowadays I only keep 2-3 tins open, and really don't make a decision on a blend until I'm at least halfway through the tin because some blends *really* change as they breathe and dry out and your taste buds get acclimated to them.

>>2134649 why did you even start a conversation if you straigh up denie anything ppl say to you? I just dont get it, i have warned you. The etc is because there are many litle things can happen to a pipe when overloaded with moisture and you (might) overheat it but thouse have minor probability and all stands on the briar characteristic which is because its natural cant be predicted (every pipe has its own character/fault) just an other example minor cracs, and yes rot can happend, did you know rot is not always biological? It is a slow procces and one might ruin a pipe other way before it would happen, and ghosting and the the taste i speak of diffrent things. BUt do as you wish happy pipeing and wish you cold smoke!

That being said really short, laconic answers aren't that helpful and can cause a lot of confusion (like with that rot thing). Coupled with your awful spelling and bad grammar it looks a bit like you're just taking a piss.

The link between that generation and the current one is mostly broken (exception being anon above) meaning people just start doing old shit at random in order to stand out or feel Unique or something. These people are hipsters.

I keep my sugar and caffeine pretty low too, so on the house to myself day I usually grab a pay-day or whatchamacallit and a diet coke from the gas station, but don't always finish the coke. Once the pipe gets lit it's lazy time so the trash sits a while. It would be a pretty nasty flavor. Rum is my pipe companion (:

I ordered another Missouri Meerschaum Ozark today, I had one before and genuinely loved it but lost it somewhere along the way. I love cobs, and have a briar pipe, but there was just something simple about the Ozark that I really enjoyed. Can’t wait to break it in on a fishing trip next week!

what exactly does drying your leaf out entail? just leaving it open for a week?

>>2135720 Depends what you mean. If a bowl of tobacco, just leave it out for a little bit until it's not too moist. If you mean whole leaf or something your grew, fuck if I know lol.

>>2135720 Some blends are have a high moisture content out of the tin. Samuel Gawith blends are notorious for this. Smoking them as is can make your pipe smoke too hot, require more relights and generally give you a worse experience. I've had some blends which are good after 20 minutes and some which needed up to 2 hours. In any case, please do not dry all of it at once. It is much easier to remove than to add moisture. Lay out enough for a bowl on a plate and leave it for 20-40 minutes. Preferably in a well ventilated room and not in direct sunlight. Feel free to experiment as you will notice different blends work well with different drying times.

Fuck 'em all. I smoke a pipe because I like smoking a pipe. Sometimes I prefer a cigar. I've never tried cigarettes. Do what you like. Gatekeeping is bullshit.
