/Out/ S.T.A.L.K.E.R. reporting in. My old mobilephone died today by falling down a tree where iwas climbing, it wasn´t /out/ enough...
Let´s start an /out/-door mobilephone thread.
Anyone with good expiriences?
What are your thoughts on /out/-door Smartphones?

Depends what REALLY is your need.

Do you want a phone that does everything you need, or do you need the strict minimum for emergency only?

For emergency, Nokia phones in ziplock bags. There's nothing better.

Can't stress this enough. If you're going out why bring a smart phone at all? A Nokia will last you probably 30x longer per charge, and you shouldn't even have it on unless you really need to call 911.

Samsung B2710, has an IP67 protection level and 1 month standby time. Phones outdoor are for emergency calls and nothing else, if you need a smartphone outside you have a problem anyways.

Do you luddites even know what smartphones actually do? GPS and weather radar can be pretty useful sometimes especially if I'm on the water. And if you actually go properly /out/, smartphones still serve some purpose when you can't get a signal.

All your shitty Nokia would be good for up north is to short the battery to try to start a fire.

Wrong. Radar shows you exactly what's happening where and how fast it's moving.

Calling for help outside of cellphone range is when you're better off with a radio (but my smartphone will still tell me my lat and long).

And considering it's the only use for a large screen which cuts your battery life to a tenth, when you could carry a simple paper map...

Smartphones can be great if you go /out/ for a short weekend of hiking, but for anything longer, you want something else.

It comes from the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games, the Stalker movie and the book the movie is loosely based on, "Roadside Picnic." Stalkers are people that enter the Zone looking for artifacts (illegally I think) in the book, in the games it refers to anyone in the zone but it is mostly used to describe the "Loners," or S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s with no allegiance to a faction. In the book the artifacts are alien in origin while in the games they are created by the Zone itself. The Zone in the book (although there are many if I remember correctly) is an area where aliens supposedly visited earth. In the games it is the exclusion zone around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. If anything I have said is wrong please correct me. I am just going on what I remember from reading the book and playing Call of Pripyat, I have not seen the movie.
