It's actually for two things- sun protection without a helmet in war; and sun protection for when you are doing outdoors things.
It's the unofficial fishing hat, why did you need to ask this if you actually fish ?

I got a camo boonie hat some 8 years ago from a surplus store. I've worn it so much the how to wash label on the inside lost all the letters.
It just works. keeps the sun off my head and keeps the sun out of my eyes.
