Hey fellas, feel free to post anything poultry related ITT.

Some of you may remember a week ago I made a thread saying I am building a coop out of pallets, well the coop is built and I got my 4 egg laying hens today. They’re beautiful. I was wondering when they will take a dip into the coop as they haven’t yet, should I put them in manually when it gets dark later?

I'm thinking about raising pigeons for meat. They are an unprotected species so you can trap some to get started. Average breeding pair can produce up to 24 eggs a year. Minimal upkeep it seems. Anyone ever tried?

Well I had to chase them around and put them in the side door of the coop because it was dark and they were just warbling around in the dark. I don’t know if they knew that the big wooden structure was their coop, I’m hoping they do now.

I took the consoomer pill and picked up a defender coop from tractor supply for my bobwhite quails. Was a bitch to put together but it’s rugged, and anodized so I assume it’ll last awhile. The birds seem happy with the space, going to add some little perches and a dirt bathing spot

The coop looks quite suitable for them and if you help them in once or twice in the evenings, they will get used to that being their sleeping spot quite soon.

I do suggest somewhat more space for them to chill in and explore; the little copse there looks perfect, as chickens love to be under trees and bushes.

I've never ate pigeon raised in captivity, but have ate ones that lived in farms. Meats good. That being said I have raised pigeons and they have low reproductively, 2 eggs usually per clutch, the babies are literally brain dead and can't move for a month or better. In my personal opinion, if you want meat and a small bird quail is way better. They shit less too.

I would look up “boknight” netting on Amazon to cover it. It will keep your chickens in and hawks out. They are such pretty birds would hate to see anything happen to them. That netting is really cheap and chinsy, so it won’t keep a fox out so I would still lock them up at night.

Chickens are stupid, i had to tuck mine in for first few nights before they realised that the coop was for sleeping in. I Also had to pick them up and put them in the compost bin for multiple days and starve them out before they started digging the compost for food. Now its their favorite spot to hang out and chill (picrel).
Also like other anons mentioned, the bottom of the run is going to be just dirt in a few weeks (Also picrel). They dont need the grass if their Well fed but they like it.

Many counties don't even allow roosters, and getting hens is perfectly fine. Just make sure to get a couple as they are social animals, make sure nothing can get into their coop/run (this includes through digging), and get them as chicks as it is easier to bond with them. They will require daily work, so make sure you have that time.

I have around 10 at any given time, just enough to have a couple to eat every month. Not running a business. Yeah pigeon and dove taste pretty similar, if you really are into pigeon, I hear people eat squabs, and they are supposedly a delicacy. Never tried it, but that would be the only reason I would want pigeons.

Usually when you get new chickens it's recommended to keep them in the coop for a couple of days, then make sure you feed them in the coop too until they start putting themselves in at night.

They are pretty similar in size and condition to what I remember the wild ones looking like, which is strange to me as wild birds tend to take the smaller more game like build. You're coop looks good. The chickens will kill the grass but you can get a bail of straw and throw it down. It gives the chickens something to do.

Here's my coop. I tied string from the tree in the center to each post along the fence. It is supposed to work as a deterrent against hawks.

If you can do basic construction you can do this. Birds need basically a roost, water, food, and a nest. Ventilation is also good as long as you can close the coop at night and that no predators can squeeze in. Pic is the interior of this one >>2135897

You can buy shit like "sapphire gems" but they,re first gen crosses and their offspring will lay random colors like easter eggers.
Good looking birds but if you want something consistent then focus on sky blue/seafoam green colored eggs from them.

We have four one year old Barred Rocks. Expanded the flock with six Easter Egger hatchlings back in late April, pic related. Now the wife has the chickum bug and we will be getting eleven more hatchlings of various kinds at the end of the month. So, from four to twenty this year, haha! I really need to expand the coop. We have a huge 360sqft run, at least.

Im not really focused on the egg color. More focused on the heavy bodied, moderately high laying, great ranging, and broody at the drop of a hat traits. That said, if I can stick to some shade of green by the end of it I don't really care if it breeds true or not so long as they pop out some shade of green. Pic related is the next cock I intend to breed them to, half WLR cornish, half speckled Sussex. Hopefully it helps get me away from the black patterning showing up in the chicks while adding some more mass. It's not ideal, but I'm having a real hard time finding standard cornish and I was able to find this guy. Just hatchery stock both ways, but still one of the heavier frames ive been able to find.

"Harm" is very relative here. Either they're slaughtered quickly and relatively painlessly, or they live to an advanced age and slowly perish away due to disease and organ failure. Nevermind that predators don't always pull off clean kills quickly. They're animals specifically born and bred for meat. If you want birds that will be of use and you won't have to slaughter them, get chickens or ducks for eggs.

For some animals, maybe. But have you ever SEEN a hen bred to be slaughtered? Theyre horrible creatures. They dont fully feather and by the time harvest day comes around theyre usually too heavy to stand. If left to live beyond their intended harvest date they would lead pathetic existences as their body outgrows what it can support. The same with meat turkeys. If you let them grow they become too big to stand up and suffer a myriad of health problems. Take your bleeding heart bullshit elsewhere. These animals were created with a purpose in mind and if you dont adhere to that THEN they suffer.

They're not arbitary because of economies of scale that allow you to buy chicken so cheap on any day of the week in the first place. They're there because X thing is produced and transported from far away places so that you can eat your avocado toast whatever time of the year and then complain online using electricity largely produced from non-renewable resources running on an infrastructure that is also made more so from non-renewable resources.

Recommend me a bedding type for large brick chicken coop that i want to clean once/twice a year and use as compost.

I’m moving to a new house that also has an old brick pig stable on the property. I want to section off a part of the stable to use as a chicken coop, and punch a hole
In the wall so the chickens can go outside. I’ve always used straw in a small chicken coop and never had any issues other than having to clean it once a week. I dont plan on cleaning the larger coop every week because the larger volume of bedding dilutes the poop. The internet does not recommend hay or straw for longterm bedding as it is prone to mold developement, rot, housing lice etc. Are these claims just memes spread by ‘homesteaders’ who want to sell their sponsors bedding materials or should i look for something different?

I use wood chips for my coop seen here >>2138686 Its a 10x8 concrete floored area i sectioned off inside the barn, then did what you want to do: punched a hole in the wall to access the run. Works pretty well. I clean it maybe once every month or two, mostly because i like to keep the a smell down in the barn since I work there. But, if youre not IN the building all the time, the occasional layer of fresh chips will keep it clean enough until you decide to muck it out.

If you cant find them leafs work great. As high as you can stack it. Theyll shred them for you. But woodchips or sawdust are usually easier to get. Straw works okay but you might need to turn once or twice.

I'm integrating them with 4 other birds that were hatched in early April, my other concern is that since those are a lot larger they might hurt these smaller ones. But the larger ones have been extremely docile from what I've seen so far

The way we are introducing ours (to 1year old birds) is to put them in the coop, but segregated by a fence so they can interact but not get to eac other. Then a couple weeks later open a door in the fence that only the small ones can fit through so they can escape bullying, then a couple weeks lager remove the barrier entirely

Wood chip deep litter. At least 6" deep, but preferably more like 8-10". Make sure to promote the chickens scratching the litter by occasionally sprinkling dried meal worms or the like, or go in yourself with a rake and agetate it ever week or so.

Yeah, they say the same with ducks. Found one based forum though that the owner actually set up a proper test. Made a box with straw in it and no heat, and a heat lamp. Their ducks never once went to the heat lamp, instead keeping each other warm in the box.

Also, you need to pick them up (each one) and put them in the laying area a couple times. They get the idea by then, but it can’t hurt to put fake eggs. Which also help with broody hens, but you won’t have that problem for a while.

Backyard chickens depend upon a regular supply of chickenfeed and thus are every bit as vulnerable to supply lines.

I'd like to see people grow their own corn and beans, dry and mill them, then use that as chicken feed, thus creating a closed system rather than a vulnerable LARP system.
