never had too. one time i puked in my friends tent. we scooped out as much as we could with paper towels, but you cant really get rid of that smell. so he bought a new one. idk what he did to wash it when he got home.

Try to brush off any major clods of dirt at camp before packing it up. Let it dry out thoroughly at home before storing it. If further cleanliness is desired, hose it off with water.

How dirty is your tent, and why do you need an outdoor product to be much cleaner than that?

This, unfortunately. If you've got some kind of nasty odors going on, you may have to replace the tent. You can use elbow grease and soap to make it stop reeking, but the odor will always be there if your face is close enough to it.

The reason for cleaning outdoor products is to retain the products' water repellancy. Dirt attracts dirt and holds in water much longer, and if your tent is covered in dirt, it will also hold in water for a longer period of time.

Actually, Mirazyme works as a really good odor neutralizer. You shouldn't have thrown out an otherwise perfectly functional tent.

Detergent will also make hydrophobic fabric hydrophilic, but neither will make your rain fly or floor not waterproof (unless you have one of those Black Diamond tents that uses water-resistant Epic fabric for the rainfly). So keeping a tent clean to retain water repellency applies only to the inner tent. Why would the inner tent part ever get dirty, though?

Waterproof = waterproof. Nothing you can do to silicone-coated nylon, short of removing the silicone coating, will make them not waterproof anymore.

Not exactly. What you're referring to is adding "water repellency." You're right, and of course, rinsing tech fabrics well enough in water, after washing them with detergent, will get the remainder of the detergent out of them and treating them with certain sprays will restore their water repellency.

But the key difference is that if a fabric is only waterproof by virtue of a fragile treatment, or if a fabric will wet-out, ever, after being exposed to enough rain, then it's not truly waterproof, but rather "water repellent." This kind of configuration allows for greater breathability in areas that are not typically exposed to rain. For instance, sleeping bag shells are treated with a Durable Water Repellent coating to keep morning dew from soaking into the down.

I would never use a washing machine, as that almost guarantees that some of the various
D-rings, clips and other tent components will get caught in the agitator and rip the shit out
of the fabric.

I'd also never laundry detergent, as that is far too harsh and will likely discolor and/or leach
the color out of the fabric, if not actually weakening the fibers of the fabric. Laundry detergent
is _designed_ to destroy clothes, so that consumers have to go buy more.

My suggestion;
Pick a hot, dry sunny day in July or August
Set up the tent with fly out in the back yard
Bucket of hot water
Large soft and pouffy sponge
Bar of unscented glycerin bath soap
Backyard hose
2- Cans of Scotchgard "Outdoor Fabric Water Shield" or Kiwi "Water Repellent Spray"

Using the hot water, sponge and bath soap, gently wash the tent fly while on the assembled
tent, rinse with hose and remove the fly and drape it over a cloths line, picnic table or similar
to dry, then wash the tent itself and leave it in the sun to dry out (best to start in the morning).

Once the tent is dry, spray the crap out of it (especially the seams) with an entire can of
waterproofing spray and let it dry, then install the fly back on the tent and spray the crap
out of that with another can of waterproofing spray, leave the tent in the backyard for a
few days to throughly dry and allow the smell to dissipate.

worse I get is dirt or some animal piss on the outside so I just use a bucket of and a sponge if it is caked on mud, inside I use a vacuum.

I should add that after the tent is throughly dried out and ready to roll up;

Get a bunch of (or have your girl get) ankle-high pantyhose socks and fill them
with cedar chips from a pet supply joint, (make sure you get cedar and not pine
chips) securing the pouches of cedar chips with a rubber band.

Toss 2-3 pouches of cedar chips onto the tent when it comes time to roll it up
and pack it away and they'll impart a light natural cedar scent to the tent, that
also has natural insect repelling qualities.

Toss more pouches of cedar chips into the Rubbermaid bins or whatever you
store your camping / hunting gear in and safety pin a couple in any sleeping bags.

Oh ya this is great stuff but with 2-3 coats gives a yellow tint. I have found Coleman has way less yellow. I think the kiwi lasts longer on shoes before recoat is needed tough. Ive used both for many things. I got hip to all this from friends and family that are postal workers. Postal workers have great know how when it comes to cool,warm.dry, ext.

if too much sand/dirt has accumulated, i use a small brush and dustpan to get it out. I probably do that every 2-3 trips. The only way to keep a quality tent for life is to baby the fuck out of it. this much effort is definitely worth it.

Does anyone have any advice for drying a tent if you live in an apartment? I've been either hanging mine over the railing of my balcony or letting it sit in a field all day if I have the time.
