What makes you want to go to Europe for /out/? Normally, it's the other way round. Everyone here is lusting for NZ and the US and all those places where you still have some real /out/ and nature, and not only some small, tiny specs of nature between the Autobahn and the skiing resort.

Anyways, for that, upper Austria might be a benefit. The mountains are mostly conifers (spruce monoculture all around…), but the lowlands, you can find leavy stuff.
If you're travelling around, lots of decidous stuff in Germany. If you're interested in low mountain ranges, check out the Frankenjura (Bavaria), Schwäbische Alb (Baden Württemberg) and Basler Jura (Switzerland though) for an interesting mix of small Limestone cliffs, loads of beeches and various towns and cities (and loads of people).

It's as beatiful as in the pic, so obviously there's loads of people, but you can still find many paths into the totes Gebirge where you'll only meet someone every hour or so (or no one at all, but that's something you can't simply do by following some 20 characters suggestion from the interwebs).
