I'm a little bit of a blacksmith /out/ and I plan on producing tools and other objects that might suit the interests of this board.
The problem is that I don't know what people would prefer the most. I know knives and axes would be popular, but what kinds would be the most sought after? Any other specific tools?

Yes, that is a possibility.

I haven't worked out how much it would cost me, so right now I don't have any idea. All that I know is that it would probably be slightly more expensive than what you could buy at a store, but I could easily make it worth it.

I'm still learning of course and I don't have the greatest hammer control yet, so surfaces are a little marred. But I've used that hatchet on saplings and to split kindling and it doesn't show any sign of wear. The few knives I've made have withstood some punishment as well, but I haven't worked them especially hard. So to answer your question, Good but not especially pretty.

I'm thinking some pretty basic stuff, really. I've recently been looking into getting a Gransfors Bruks small forest axe, it's really perfect for what I'd need it for. And quite nice looking, as well.
As for a knife, a basic bushcraft style knife might be in my interest. Not too sure.
Though if I were to order things, I would be able to just get the axe head, or just the knife blank, eh?

I think you misunderstood a bit, I was saying if I were to order something, I'd like to get just the axe head/knife blank. I like making handles and such myself.

Yeah, wouldn't be that much of a problem. I would need to forge weld that gransfors bruks axe to get the proper shape, this is kind of embarrassing but I haven't welded anything that large but I know it isn't too hard to perform. I normally just punch holes for handles.

I'd be interesting in buying a forged knife or axe. The hatchet/tomahawk you've got going on in your picture is pretty cool. I wouldn't be so worried about looks over for function if your tools could take a beating.

look into traditional wood working tools dude, I make my own, sorting out a better forge and trying to save for a real anvil as the steel block I've been using is...shit.

I'll give you my pricing technique:
>cost of materials (M)
>time spent (H)
>Cost per Hour (CH)
>50% profit

So that would be
M+(CH*H)*1.50=Cost

(Materials should encompass fuel etc etc.)

(next up is a little thought exercise)
So for an axe:
>Steel costs $10
>Gas/coal costs $10
>Handle costs $10
.M=30
>Time taken is four hours
>your hourly wage is $10
>(CH*H)=40
>meaning that
>M+(CH*H)=70
>70*1.50=105

Which means the axe would cost $105.

Obviously your profit percentage can change to keep prices competitive, but that formula always worked for me.

If you want to improve your steel block anvil, see if you can get hold of old forklift tines and weld them to is. If i remember rightly they're a tough enough steel to be beat on for years.

Just check /out/ every once and awhile, when I'm ready to sell I'll post some contact info and take some orders. I'll be able to customize and personalize pretty much anything to any sort of specs... just so long as I get like a 1/16" of wiggle room.

dude you can have way mroe than 1/16 inch of wiggle room. i can even accurately measure 1/16th of an inch on my tape measure.

You most probably can cut that price in half. Like I said, it was a thought exercise aimed at making sure you understood the formula.

Always price your jobs right, though. You should at least be making your time and materials back

Knives aren't to difficult, but still a little tricky. Any style you'd prefer?

Also, If and when I do this, I'm thinking of making a custom touchmark for each run differentiating it from later ones and from batches going to other places. Any one got any good ideas? If no one has any I'll probably just stamp "/out/"

Stuff modelled on items from Skyrim, LotR, Fallout etc. Just as long as you're careful to respect copyrights, that could be an earner for you, especially if you're willing to engrave and paint it as well (or get someone to do that), and I reckon you could always sell it to a comic book store if a deal fell through.

I can totally understand that OP. You have the ability to make practical tools, it would be a shame to waste that skill making toys for roleplaying manchildren.

I had an idea for a double-headed screwdriver once, though it's probably been done. Self-explanatory really, one inanimate metal rod with philips head at one end, flat head at the other and a handle in the middle. I don't know how you stop the handle rotating around the rod, maybe small rods/spikes sticking out of the middle at 90 degrees to the screwdrivers (in a cross shape) and the handle is set around them? Is there a reason I haven't seen one of these yet?

I know, I have one of those but that's two pieces (at least one of which is fiddly and prone to getting lost) when you could have both in 1 piece. I'll take your word for it, it just seems like the manufacturing process would be simpler, and the result would be more useful than a screwdriver that only has one compatible screw type.

Eating utensils. Forks and knives, spoons. Stuff so you can cook, eat. I'd love to get a utensil set and a good knife and axe but I can't find any smiths around here that do small jobs like that. One guy is so busy making drawer and cabinet pulls for custom orders he works 6 days a week.

You will find that a lot of knives throughout history have had a generic shape so look around and make general purpose bushcraft/hunting knives and they will sell like hot cakes

Make small medium and large blades too

I would pay a lot for a good copy of a schrade sharpfinger and deerslayer

I do like older style knives, more so than things like tactical knives
I can also pattern weld, but that would bump up the price considerably.

My only options now are buying shit fiskars/gerber axes(with chinese slag metal and plastic handles) or beautiful vintage axes that are 9/10, horribly abused.
I 'refurbished' one i found in my grandmothers basement a few days ago, and am pretty satisfied(Pics available on request) but the head still has quite a few gouges taken out of it, and *honorific* pitting that makes it look beautiful(The way it reflects light makes it almost look like velvet, though since the pitting is so shallow, it still feels slick to the touch) but probably makes it unsuitable for hard use.

Watch this video, and you'll realize why i truly envy you, and your blacksmith hobby.(Id love to try it out, but the clostest 'workshop' i have access to isnt even 1/100th as well equiped or cozy as the one in this video.
