With a shotgun, you can herd the rabbits into an area and shoot them. With 22lr, you need to be very quiet and still. You also need good eyes. They will be most active at dawn and dusk. Trapping is less time intensive, but more labor intensive. In my area you can trap public land with tags. Not sure about Canada.
