Can I make up for the loss of "grip" with skill, or is there a level of advantage barbs provide that you really need? I find i get fish close to the boat but lose them, but I'm willing to develop the skill - I'm basically brand new

Just leave the barbs and when removing the hook, pull with some purpose. They exist for a reason, and it’s going to negatively impact your catch if you remove them.

I fly fish anon and do 99% catch and release. I too feel bad for hurting fish lips, and it gets worse, especially if they swallow it. Crimped barbs make it much easier to get a hook removed in bad spots and if you do break them off, a crimped barb makes it much more feasible they can spit it out later.
Anyway, just work on your sets when they hit, keep the rod tip up, and keep slack out of the line. A crimped or barbless hook also makes the sets much cleaner too.

Leave the barbs. If you have to get drastic, cut the hook, pull the line out, pull the other part of the hook out. Hold the little fuckers tight, even if they're playing dead, because the moment you cut the hook they're going to be gone.

Crimping the barbs is fine, but it does you mean you lose some more fish. Keep the line tight as best you can as slack is when the fish get away, especially with barbless hooks.

It was as hot as hooch today, so I went creek wading and had a pretty good time. I caught mostly green sunfish, a couple bass and ended up with 4 crappie on the day as well, which surprised me, being in a creek and all. I fell a couple of times, and am thinking a walking stick would help. Any creek waders have suggestions?

You will rarely gut hook a fish if you use the correct size hook with the matching size. Use a long shank hook when possible. Personally I'd stay away from lures with treble hooks because if the lure is known to catch game fish a treble hook is likely gonna fuck fish up man. I've caught Ladyfish I use for Snook and Tarpon bait the other day a Ladyfish ended up getting 2 hooks from the treble hook embedded into the size of it and one hook in the bottom lip

Gonna get hate for this but I've never gutted a fish ever since I moved up to actually good fishing gear, $250+ rod range will give you the sensitivity where you'll immediately feel a bite and you'll be able to set the hook.

Most of the times when someone gut hooks a fish it's because they're being a boomer and bait fishing and/or they're a noob and setting the hook way late.

This does not stop a hook digging into the worst parts of a fishes mouth such as their tongue. That's a death sentence for a lot of fish since a main artery runs up there.

I ran flouro as a main line once and it pissed me off. It’s real stiff and heavy, doesn’t like to wind around the reel so great and will sink lures real deep which was a pain in the ass when I tried to cast some Mepps from shore.

Braid is my favorite all around. If you’re bass fishing, they aren’t line shy so flouro won’t help there. If you needed the benefits of flouro for anything, just use a damn leader.

I used to run spinners and crankbaits all the time when I lived up north, then I moved to FL where they only work for bass for 30min at dusk when a cold front is coming through or a few weeks of pre-spawn. I had to learn how to use soft baits and work then slow. Switch it up to a Texas rigged worm or little brush hog and bounce that thing along the bottom.

All fluorocarbon. I only use braid for spinning reels for the obvious benefits; no line twist, smaller diameter per pound strength so you can put a lot more on, etc.

But I love fluorocarbon, a lot. I exclusively use Sunline Sniper.

I almost never use the flouro leaders. It doesn’t matter for bass. I will use it to tie Texas rigs, but that’s because I’m lazy and impatient and will hook them up to a snap swivel, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re lazy and swap out baits a ton like me.

Just do braid straight to the lure. The visibility thing with flouro is for very shy fish, maybe like trout in a crystal clear stream. Or the abrasian resistance if you’re fishing around real sharp coral that is fraying up your braid. Beyond that, freshwater lake fishing for bass and crappie and shit, it’s not worth the trouble to deal with flouro because there is basically no benefit in those situations unless you have one setup that you use to run baits super deep.

well, come fall dead drift egg patterns and/or swing streamers and you'll get steelhead. You're mostly looking at carp, smallmouth, largemouth, and other warm water species for right now. if you want bass, drag a streamer past cover (rocks, trees, eddies, shopping carts, etc)
the grand river and conneaut creek should also be on your radar. crawdad flies are good to have around, too. if you want carp, look for them feeding and drop a fly delicately on their nose. my go-to carp fly is a backwards bug, I've posted pics previously, but I'm going to post it again. i'd gladly tie you a few for a good price, or if you tie your own flies i can post a tutorial. the lead-eye version is also good for smallmouth. then panfish are just panfish, drag something that looks vaguely like food past them and you'll probably catch one. what gear do you already have, again?

Look into the effects of PCBs on the body (specifically in kids) and see if PCBs are present in the river you fish. Even though F&G departments set an acceptable level to consume, everything I can find indicates that even at extremely low levels PCBs can have serious effects. I can't tell you what to do, but I would never feed my kid fish from a water with PCBs.

Depends on where you are. Every state I have lived in had no industrial contaminants in most bodies of water so it was just the big rivers that had problems. I suppose it might be different if you live well on the downstream side of things or in a state that was a major industrial center.

I don't know why all these people are recommending braid for baitcasters or worse braid to leader. A baitcaster is designed to mitigate the downfalls of fluorocarbon, you don't want any of that stuff on a spinning reel, but on a baitcaster it's amazing. If you're fishing clear water, use fluorocarbon. Some bass are actually pressured and the line may make the difference between being bit or not.

a gx2 is not the worst rod I've ever used. daiwa and shimano are good brands, expect to spend about 80 USD on a combo, maybe more if you're serious.
spend whatever you've got left on a small selection of floats, hooks, weights, and a few lures. if you want to go real basic, skip the lures, and pare down to small to medium hooks, a variety of small to medium floats and splitshot, and a pole. note that a rod and a pole, though often used intercahgably, are not the same thing. the distinction is: a rod has eye guides, and a reel seat, where as a pole is designed to be used with only a line, no reel.

I don’t even know what is on the market now. There used to be these Berkley Lightning Rods for the same price as the Ugly Stik GX2 and those were solid on a budget. I think they’re made of more graphite instead of the Ugly Stik’s fiberglass. Pick up an expensive baitcasting bass rod and feel it, they will be light and have a nice sensitive rip and good backbone that doesn’t flop around a ton, but they’re not really “stiff” like a heavy catfish rod. I don’t know how to explain it, but you notice it when you hold them, the graphite and fast rebound compared to super flexible fiberglass with no feel or sensitivity.

I once kept a lake trout that had a tube jig stabbed through its gut. There was some thick scar tissue around the hook and the plastic was seriously degraded so I think it had been there awhile. It seemed healthy, but that could not have been comfortable.

Canned sweet corn, panko, and jello. Mix them all up, using the water from the sweet corn to moisten up the mixture. Let it sit for like 5 minutes after mixing, then form dough balls. If it's too dry, add a bit more water until it's able to form balls pretty easily. I use method leads for carp fishing, but you should be able to squeeze it around a treble well enough. Add corn to the hook(s) and let it fly. You should check it every 10 mins or so, and rebait, as the mixture will chum the area and give off more scent.

hello, im a visitor from /biz/. my girl and i have been trying to learn how to fish and this is harder than anything on biz. we live in GA and are trying to fish the chattahoochee river off the bank.

Only the first guide on my fly rods have an insert (stainless steel). I usually have to use the 3rd or 4th guide from the butt when using a 12ft leader, which I use almost exclusively. The loop goes through the tip of the rod and has about a foot of slack, then the leader is tensioned around the back of the reel and hooks the guide. My fly rods are 9ft/9½ft respectively and I only have them lined when I'm practicing or when I plan on using them

Musta got a shit one. I've got a couple of Okuma CBF-500s and a CBF-1000 and they had hard lives during hardwater season this year, the CBF-1000, in particular, had regular fights with 10+lb fish. I was really pleased with them.

That's actually a really solid start. What's that purple/orange marabou abomination? Looks perfect for steelhead. The 6 weight will be good for smallies, panfish, and similar, the 8 weight will be great for steelhead., carp, bass, pike, and similar. I've never fished the ashtabula river for warm water but I am based out of kent so if you're interested sometime we could meet up and go fishing. I'd say pick up some hard sinking poly leaders and tie a micro swivel off to the end and use that to supplement your floating lines, a 10 foot 6ips sink tip is all you really need to swing for steelhead, and itll help with deeper holes while smallmouth fishing.

I have several sizes of the Okuma Avenger Baitfeeder reel, and I had one break a tooth off the main gear in the reel after the reel took a saltwater bath. Fixed it for $7. I really like them aside from that one small frustration that was really my fault.

Reason I don't trust Lew's is because they have a YouTube program where they pay you for videos that feature Lew's products in them but the problem is people don't disclose this and they also don't require you to do a traditional pitch so what looks like an ordinary day of fishing is actually just a Lew's commercial.

To me, what speaks volumes is when people use equipment who aren't sponsored or are sponsored by different companies but still use the other brand. (eg. St Croix or Shimano).

All of this isn't to say they make bad products...but it makes me very suspect if they are actually great for the $$$ spent.

I'm sure people will disagree with me here, but barbs don't do as much as people think they do... at least on smaller hooks. The barbs only keep the fish on if they are fighting lightly, one big head shake and even a larger barb is gonna pull out. Using drag proplerly and experience will keep the fish on a barbless hook. In my opinion however, barbless isn't as practical as you might think, the only time I've wished I were barbless is when a fish swallowed a hook. With careful attention, a barb can be pulled out of a normal lip hook with minimal damage. It's usually retards who manage to destroy a fish's mouth removing a hook, or often people who are scared to hold the fish to remove a hook. I've seen people grab the lure with pliers and just "fling" the fish off. What I would suggest is to crush barbs only on things that can easily be swallowed, or if you have a hard time getting a hook out of a fish AFTER you try, then you can crush the barb and remove it. A good example would be when you hook one through the eyes, just crush the barb before removing the hook. People will say "his eye is already fucked" and just yank out a barbed hook but that's pretty shitty reasoning to inflict more damage. I actually always carry small bolt cutters with me for times when I may even have to cut a hook. Never had to use it yet... but the idea stemmed from a time where I wish I had one but didn't.

Some fish just engulf lures/hooks. No way to 100% avoid it. Long shank hooks help tremendously for panfish with little mouths, and lures like spinnger rigs where fish can't possibly engulf the whole thing... but sometimes if you aren't specifically targeting a certain species with a very specialized bait, it's gonna happen. This is especially true if you are microfishing. It's something I really enjoy because it's a good way to search fish and find new species, but using small ass hooks means something bigger can just smash it and almost always swallow it. You don't need something as tough as an ugly stik unless you are a neanderthal and crawl through some thick brush to get to fishing spots. Just take care of your shit and be careful with the tip not to smash it into stuff and most rods will hold up fine to anything other than casting something way too heavy for the tip to handle. Get something like a daiwa aird-x if you want a really good feeling rod for cheap.

I had a nice mangrove snapper take all 3 trebles on a topwater popper in such a way that his mouth was basically fused shut, and I used the leader clipper on my pliers, and was able to free the fish, so I'm all for this as well. Fish finders are best at finding depth and structure. I've got ~$2000 worth of sonar and chart plotter, and most of the time clear fish marks don't bite and bites come from fish I'm too retarded to see on the plotter, but the plotter tells me when I'm in the depth I want over the kind of structure I want, and that's how it helps me catch much more fish (because it really does help me catch more fish, especially when the conditions aren't "fishy").

If you're drifting for fish that form big schools or ice fishing, then you will see the fish you catch on your sonar, but for most people chasing solitary predator fish in shallower water, it's about finding the kind of water you want to fish, not finding the fish themselves directly.

You don't need to spend the money I have to get a sonar that will help you catch fish, the $200 Garmin 4SV I have for canoeing helps me catch fish nearly as well as my bigger and better unit on the bigger boat, but my boat unit automates the use of my trolling motor, gives me diagnostic data for my outboard, has a screen large enough that I can just turn it around and still be able to read it if I want to fish from my front deck instead of my driving station, doesn't require a paper lake map, and tells me what the bottom is right for a hundred+ feet on either side of the boat instead of just what's directly below me.

Noon's a hard time to start fishing. Both of those species are species I'd call easier to catch, IF you have a good idea of where the structure in the lake is and where they're going to be in the conditions you're fishing in. A sonar and plotter can be very helpful at this, but knowing the habits of the fish in your body of water will also be important, and electronics won't necessarily help you with that.

Figuring out what the bottom of the lake looks like and what the fish are doing at the time of day and time of year you're fishing should be priority 1. You probably need to start with research, rather than exploration, unless it's a small body of water.

On a big lake it would just take too long to brute force determine what you need to know unless you just get lucky.

They aren't a meme, but they aren't all the same. I don't like ones that are too dark, because then you have to take them off to look at shade covered water. When direct bright sunlight is on the water, polarized lenses makes it easier to see below the surface for sure. Lens color is where it gets tricky, haven't tried enough to tell major differences but I tend to prefer sepia/brown lenses personally.

You can get decent ones for a fair price at most sporting goods places. I have some Walmart ones for when I'm out, so if I lose them (and I have) I don't worry too much. What I get even less is out of all the YouTubers I have tried to watch, only a small few put a polarizer on their camera. They get nice video of glare though I guess.

The sunglasses I use now have been lost once, for about 2 weeks in some woods on the way to a creek. I realized I tend to lose them when I rest them on the top of my head or hat so now I have them on a leash and let them sit around my neck if I don't have them on. It's helped a bunch. It gets in the way of the chest camera I usually have on, but it's not bad.

The Johnson Beetle Spin I mentioned will catch most fish, you literally just cast it out, and reel it in, simple as can be. Get the 1/4oz version of it to match the rod I listed. If you want hooks for worms just make sure to get ones with long shanks, these are more expensive than others but don't bend on you, I'd get these. In size 2(biggest)

For the rod and reel I'd take another approach.
I'd suggest a medium or medium light rod between 6' and 7' long. Get a spinning reel, because although it's a steeper learning curve than a spincaster, you can pick it up with in a few days of practice and you'll be able to cast much further.

The Shimano FX line is dirt cheap and I like the rods better than the Ugly Stik GX2 which costs 3x more. I've had the 6' Medium Spinning combo for over a decade and it's caught me many fish. It's not the best, but it's been totally reliable and I still use it despite having purchased several other rods. A $50 rod like the Sellus is better, but if you just want to try out fishing you don't need to spend that much.

Walmart may have the combo or the rods available in your area.

He honestly makes it more complicated than it has to be.

All you need is a long shank size 7 hook not a 7/0 get bobbers and a bag of small swivels about the size of a bean seed I forgot the size off hand.
Buy a 10-20lb mono leader spool if your reel line is braid tie a Palomar knot from the braid to the one end of the swivel on the other end of the swivel tie a clinch knot using the mono leader depending on how deep your water is I'd avoid having to long of a leader so your bobber can keep the bait off the bottom and more in the area you want it so if the water is 5 feet deep and the fish are 3 feet from the top you want to make sure your leader isn't long that it passes that feet of water bobber corks work good to they have a plastic pipe you pull out and put your line in the foam normally there is a cut for the line then put the plastic pipe in so the line gets stuck where the plastic pipe pushes it against the foam. I'll possibly make a video on something like this for my channel

It was a Carolina Rig. 30lb braid main > 1/2 oz barrel sinker > plastic bead > Uni Knot > swivel > Uni knot > 20lb mono > Palomar Knot > 4/0 circle hook with a bluegill head. It broke at the top of the swivel, Uni Knots are known to not work particularly well with braid so that was most likely the point of failure.

I have been toying with an improved Fish N Fool knot, which is two wraps around the eyelet. It is a pain in the ass on small test lines, but for larger test it works very well. You have to make sure your wraps go on opposite sides of the mainline, but then there are 3 separate connection points holding the hook or lure, rather than just 2. It's very strong. I'll post a pic sometime tonight if anyone is interested.

It's a good way to lose teeth method but works for getting a decent spread in the water most of the time I'd use hold it with your teeth with a net no bigger then 7 feet. Also for people who suck at cast nets you can buy the Perfect circle just don't buy it anywhere online other then from the company that makes it because I've bought a Chinese rip off from ebay and Aliexpress you'd basically have to cut the lead lines and tie them back on to put circle on it however the Perfect circle the pieces you snap together inside the net and basically it allows you to get a perfect open every cast I've seen it used by random people on a pier trying it out for the first time that have never through a cast net.

aight niglovers im very new to this hobby and ive been fishing along with (inexperienced, also new) friends for a week but tomorrow im going to go to a big local fishing supply store to get my own gear.

i went through most of the pastebin but want some recommendation based on my use. firstly, memecasters seem interesting, im really intrigued and the learning curve seems nice, but it might not be the best type of rod as my first and only(for a while) rod, will it? I also don't want to wait for delivery as i want to use it this weekend so preferrably this store should have the rod in stock: vismania.nl.

as for my usage, for now it is to catch a fucking pike because we tried for several days with no success. but obviously i want this one rod to introduce me to different fishing styles. However i probably wont use it in salt water and just on shore. I actually don't know what type of fish is around me.. I asked in the last thread and mentioned the ugly stik and some of you said that it might not be the best for feeling movement with jigs and stuff, so what should i be looking for? any safe bets as far as brands go that are available on that site, so perhaps i can just decide based on specs? if so what weight, length, etc. should i be looking for?

Personally id go lightweight spinner first, then a moderate spinner, then a baitcaster

The baitcaster does some stuff better, but the tradeoff is you cant really throw very light tackle

You said you want to fish for pike. Most people use heavier topwater lures or swimbaits for fish like that. You would arguably want a medium heavy rod so you can throw lures in the 1/4oz to 1oz range. 1/4oz spinners like a beetle spin is still small enough to catch panfish too. for pike, you would be using shit like a whopper plopper in the 1/2oz to 3/4oz range ideally. Ugly Stik gx2 is actually ideal for that because the rod is lumber enough to keep the hooks in the fish's mouth when it fights... but it will have shit sensitivity to to the floppiness when fishing for more sensitive biting fish and setting standard hooks. still perfectly able to catch fish, people do it every day as have I. The only real advantage of a gx2 is durability, as rods in the similar price point feel WAY better in terms of sensitivity.

Caught him a couple of days ago. 15" but would love know what's wrong with his tail. Didn't even fight till he was in the boat
Looks like some kind of red fungus. Soft and slimy. Fish had no other damage.

If it was an aquarium fish, I'd call it fin rot and recommend giving the fish a 10 minute epsom salt bath and changing out 75% of the tank water 3 days in a row and if that doesn't work, a course of antibiotics.

It might have started as an injury from a larger fish trying to eat him, but it's definitely infected.

Yeah nets only 4 feet. If I use an 8 or 10 footer I always go over the shoulder or flip it over my hand 5 or 6 times. Idk where you get the "good way to lose teeth from" though I'm not a 70 IQ retard, no idea what kind of retard you need to be to snag your teeth enough to lose them.

Its impossible to sight fish without them. I use them year round, everything from bass to steel head. Heres a steelhead i spotted with polarized glasses and walked up to and snatched with my barehands. Before i grabbed it some old ladies walked by and they all tried on my polarized sunglasses and were amazed to see the fish in 4 feet of water just chilling in the middle of a downtown urban area.

thanks. i think i shouldnt rush it considering i might regret it. i have an idea which is to just buy a reel for this old rod that i have from like 8 years ago that has a broken reel. it has a 10-30 gram rating which i assume is the lure weight. isnt that great for pike? im thinking of making this a temporary pike rod for now and get a light rod next week so i dont have to rush that one. though this rod is not like the modern ones, its rather thick and feels heavy. it has no power rating though, but the lure weight bracket makes me think its good for pike. is this a good idea? what should i look for in a reel to match this rod?

My $.02, if the fluorocarbon helps even a little to get more strikes it's worth it.
Also if you fish somewhere there are pike, they'll cut your braid off way easier than fluoro if you hook into one while bass fishing.

Perch may be a little deeper now desu. Many jig them from boats.
Usually they chill on the bottom. Tie two-three hooks on about 6" apart, depending on how many hooks are legal in your area. Look up a bass drop shot rig, same thing but you'll add extra hooks.
Tie a sinker at the bottom.
If there are rocks try to just cast it out and let it sit. Lift your rod up when you retrieve it to avoid snags.
You can also try a bobber but that's less effective for perch in my experience.
Throw some smallish minnows on each hook and let it sit.
Stay there a couple hours around sunset, make sure the minnows are on the hooks and alive, and you'll almost certainly catch something. Maybe not a perch, but something.
In my neck of the woods we are getting perch right now on the first mud flat after the first break, 30-40 feet deep.

Generally because when people fish with bait they tend to stay in one spot and chill while waiting for a strike. Hence the term "soaking bait".

Lure fishing on the other hand tends to be a more active form of fishing (casting in/around a particular spot for a few mins then moving on) than soaking bait since most of the time you don't have that nice live/dead bait smell on your lure that would normally attract them to you.

if you just want something cheap to slap on it buy that shimano sienna 2500. I have one and it's been solid for well over a year. if they had the 3000 or 4000 version in stock I'd say get that, but it didn't look like they did. either way, for a cheap reel it's very smooth, casts pretty far, and has held up surprisingly well for me, haven't caught any monsters on it though. spool it up with some 15lb braid and you should be good to go.

Killing fish is a hell of a lot less likely with lures. When baitfishing, gut hooking is pretty common so if the line breaks the fish now how a hook embedded in their gut. With lure fishing, the hook is almost always in the mouth where a fish can shake the hook eventually if the line breaks.

this is exactly why i did. its pretty nice, al though smaller than i expected. i might change this rod for a light one later on and use this for light, then get a memecaster later for some bigger fish. one thing i noticed is when reeling it makes some noise, i think its the bearings. obviously its normal but it feels like its a bit more than normal, have you experienced that too? apart from that im pretty happy with it, thanks for the recommendation.
