>>2138432This. Texas isn't actually the worst, but you have to be ready to either drive 8 hours somewhere fun or just camp in a kind of boring place. When I was kid I did a multi-day trip down the Frio river, and that was super fun. Other places include Big Bend Ranch State Park (a lot more isolated than the N.P.) or taking a trip to Louisiana (Atchafalaya Swamp Basin isn't too far from Houston, where I am). Being /out/ in Texas means that it won't take long for you to begin to hate ranchers, who own vast swaths of usually the most beautiful landscape. However, it is not uncommon to actually meet one and get permission to go out on his land, if you're not autistic like me.
Another pretty area is Fort Davis national forest but I haven't actually camped there, only've driven through. The rivers around Austin are nice but really crowded.
