Has anyone ever tried to take a cat hiking? I have 3, one is particularly athletic and agile, and I feel like he might like it, but I really have no idea if that works.

funnily enough, my cousin takes her cat out on hikes here in AZ. The secret is to get the kitten used to the leash as early as possible. Also a shit ton of luck

So it wouldn't work to take a s middle-aged cat out on a leash? I mean he is really athletic and active and he is kinda stuck here in my apartment. I have three cats and he is by far the most muscled.

get a harness and leash and see how the cat likes it. take it for small walks in the yard and progress from there

b-but I don't have a yard (apt) and I live in a city so I think the only way to do it would be to plunk him in a carrier and bring him to a forest somewhere

Only potential problem is that if they are an idoor cat, they will always whine to go outside once you start it. They might even try to bolt out the door too after they get a taste of the outdoors. but yes, cats can be trained to do it. especially laid back carefree males. one big issue though is that they have a really strong instinctual prey drive, similar to dogs like jack russels and such, so they will get worked up if they see a squirrel or bird.

The biggest issue I foresee is that cats have very different social orientation than dogs. Pack travel is intuitive for dogs but not for cats. Dogs are fundamentally social and want frequent and functional interaction with you, while cats are fundamentally solitary even if they are socialized and like human contact/etc. I can't predict what a cat would do in an unfamiliar area, but a cat that's comfortable would probably ignore you to roam on its own looking for shit to murder and would only come back and find you later for some free food and ear scratches.

My old girl got ran over by a car. She was as deaf as a log, didn't hear the car, as she was taking a dump. At least she died loving something she loved. Was truly a great dog, we've had fifteen years of hikes together.

This March my girlfriend and I decided to get a new one. Pupper didn't feel too comfortable in a hammock at first, but now she's sleeping with us.

How often do you find parasites on your pups? I never had a dog and recently I've been thinking maybe I should adopt one and go on hikes together but I'm worried about not giving him enough care, last animal I had was an hamster when I was like 6 and it died of stomach illness.

Sorry about your loss anon, the last time i cried in my life was when I was 12 and my dog died slowly and painfully for over 6 months of distemper, it fucking broke my heart, now i have a 6yo stray female that my brother adopted since she was a pup and a black German shepherd puppy about 6 months old
