are these vacuum insulated jobs a meme?
I have a 17oz one I got free from a hotel stay that seems to work well for very short walks but then again just a gallon plastic jug stays pretty cool if I keep it out of the sun.

who makes a really good one that will last a while? In 1gal size

I took one into the field one time and while it makes water stay cool, you get less and it weighs more. If you're a office worker, it'll be fine. If you hump 240s for a living, you're better off with a gallon jug in your daypack.

Vaccum insulated have their place, but for outdoor use id stick to a single wall, so you can boil water in it if needed. Added bonus is theyre lighter

I bought two recently. One was a cheap no-name one from amazon, and the other was a GSI Microlite, which was 2x the price. I decided to do an experiment where i would see which one would keep water hot for longer. Both started at 180 F.

>4 hours: GSI - 165 F, noname - 155F
>16 hours: GSI - 140 F, noname - 125 F
>24 hours: GSI - 125F, noname - luke warm

Moral of the story, you get what you pay for. The noname one is by all means not a terrible product. But I won't be keeping my soup hot in it for 24 hours+.

This is the real answer. I love them and have probably too many. I would never bring one on an actual trip that did not involve a car. I have a few Dutch surplus ones that are EXCELLENT. They are modern manufactured and will legit keep your drink piping hot for a day. No bullshit. I have many and this is the best I have found. I would never bring one in a pack though, just way too large. I got mine in new condition in the USA at a surplus store but here is one I found online:

I fill 3L water bladders with ice and then water before I leave for a hike, but all that ice will melt by the time you are done hiking if you hike for hours in the heat.

The vacuum water bottles stay in the car, and keep ice water iced all day so I can refill my water bladders with ice and water.

it's a natural weak point and once broken, will leak the vacuum out and also allow liquids to potentially leak into it and contaminate it or pose a health risk as it will be impossible to clean.

I've had my klean kanteen for 12 or 13 years. These things are amazing. The only think I'm going to need to replace is the little rubber gasket in the lid.
The doubled walled vaccum sealed canteens are great but I only really use it for coffee. I suggest getting a quality one and not some cheap amazon one if you expect to actually use it outdoors. A small drop can break the vacuum seal. I know someone who broke their cheap canteen's seal by just dropping it in their home sink while washing it.

It also negates the heat/cold insulating nature of the canteen.
Definitey stay away from cheap knockoffs.
