Hello frens! I was wondering what the best hidden gem hikes are within a 4 hr driving radius of Washington D.C.

Ive hiked all over the area for years and all the most challenging and rewarding trails are very well known and heavily trafficked even if they're out in the middle of nowhere. If you want to get away from everyone else your best bet is to either get in early or stray off the path. My friends and I used to swim the Potomac to the islands at great falls and found all kinds of cliff jumping spots, beaches, and deer trails. There is one thing I did that was pretty cool but it wasn't very challenging or beautiful. I hiked from lake frank in rockville down to Georgetown. and there are parks and strips of forests the whole way down. So even though you are in the middle of cities and suburbs you still feel out in nature

Is it really that hard to just get some of the PATC maps and plan out something yourself?
AllTrails is decent for plotting out stuff but yeah it can blow out spots. Really is only a matter of time till everything is on it

All trails is a plague. Luckily COVID restrictions ending should take down some traffic outdoors. It's still absolute hell to be out anywhere in any season but Winter. I fucking hate the east coast for the people alone. Also no big game hunting. Luckily I've got private land but it's nothing like when I grew up in the hill country. I'm seriously considering moving out west or Australia/Canada.

Even in the years leading up to covid, the outdoors had become increasingly crowded due to social media. Then covid hit and I was suddenly longing for the "good old days" of years past, which was only "good" relative to the madness of 2020.
I wish I had gone /out/ more between 2000 and 2015 when things weren't quite as bad.
