Anybody on here ever hunt with a pellet gun? I live in Canada, I am interested in getting small game permit but firearms can be a bit of a pain up here, and you factor in the storage accessories, licenses, courses, munitions, the gun itself.. it all becomes rather expensive- and I’m a poorfag! I already own this Benjamin .22 cal air rifle. It fires at 495 FPS. (In Canada any air gun that fires at 500 FPS or greater is classified as a firearm) My only concern is humane kills, I think for squirrels and rabbits it would be okay, but anything bigger, even a racoon, I am concerned the rifle might not have the power to kill the animal humanely. I have never hunted before but am interested in learning and think this would be a good way to get started. I am interested in trying different meats, learning to work with skins, and basically learn some skills. Any tips, tricks, experiences, advice, insults, or what have you is all appreciated.

Poorfag in Canada looking to hunt small game? Get a PAL, buy a 22lr rifle. If you get denied buy a crossbow. Airguns are the ultimate larp and serve no real purpose. I say that as a former air gun enthusiast.

>>2141757 >It fires at 495 FPS. I almost spit my coveffe out when I read that.
I knew nucs were cucked but holy shit wtf
I'm about to pickup a pellet gun in .22 that shoots 1200 fps
You can hunt raccoons on down with a pellet gun but idk about one that only shoots 500fps. feels inhumane for anything other than birds and squirrels. likely just end up wounding animals

>>2142196 I'll second this. It's also preferable to hunt small game with an air gun or shotgun vice 22lr because they bullets don't become a danger to everyone when you shoot into the trees. You hear it every now and then, but someone dies around hunting season because of stray bullets. Be courteous to your fellow man. Wear orange, know what's beyond your target.

>>2141757 >500 FPS or greater is classified as a firearm Holy shit, really?
Even in NZ I can get a 1000+fps .22 without a license.
I’d be reluctant to shoot anything with 500fps, you’re probably just going to hurt it.

>>2142979 Further to last, used it for rabbits and these noisy bastards. (They’re a noxious pest in NZ.)

>>2142176 I’ve yet to find a real use for it besides target shooting and collecting dust. Was hoping maybe I could get my moneys worth out of it by using it to pick up some skills for the future, harvesting meat and furs. But it seems best to hold off for now.

>>2142979 you only need 700 fps to take down a deer believe it or not!

I shot a woodchuck in my back yard with one once, it was a vitals shot but the pellet was so small it was writhing in pain for about 10minutes until finally I decided to put it down with my foot. Not very effective and that is just a medium rodent so if I were you I'd probably just go through the trouble of getting a real firearm if you are serious about hunting

Why does everyone care about humane kills? It's a fucking animal, the only animal I care about are dogs. (Don't fucking hurt puppers)

>>2144037 Three reasons: one it's merciful; two, it's efficient, you don't have to risk injury putting the animal outif it's misery or risk losing the animal because it ran away injured and died where you can't find it; and three, because all that adrenaline taints the meat.

>>2144084 >it's merciful idc aslong as it's not a fellow human or dog
>it's efficient For what? I just wanna shoot animals.
>you don't have to risk injury putting the animal outif it's misery How are you going to injure yourself doing that?
>risk losing the animal because it ran away injured and died where you can't find it Eh, if I go hunting one day I'd like to keep some part of the animal as a trophy, fair enough.
>>2144084 >because all that adrenaline taints the meat. I'm not rlly interested in eating the animal (depends) but is this actually true? Think I've heard of it before

>>2141757 My pellet gun is only .177 but it shoots at 1200fps and it doesn’t kill birds unless im really close. Hunting is weird because theres a natural drive to do it and a rewarding feeling when you succeed but usually that’s completely eclipsed by the guilt of killing an animal. Id just fish if i were you

Nuisance bastards. Imagine this outside your window, EVERY. FUCKING. NIGHT.
It’s louder than this vid makes it appear, plus there’s only one doing it.
There’s a lot less now than 20 years ago though. Back then you could hardly drive anywhere at night without hitting one.

They’re known for carrying TB n shit, so the meat has to be tested before cooking.
I’m told it’s pretty good, not comparable to other meats.

>>2143159 FPS doesnt mean any thing, anon. What you're wanting is FPE, which is Foot Pounds of Energy. You're gonna need 100 to about 200 FPE depending on deer size. Even so, 700 fps is only gonna be around 30ish FPE which, even with proper shot place a pellet gun in .177 chances of killing a deer is pretty much zero.

Don't use that toy, its just cruel and won't kill anything but mice and small birds. Plenty of Canadians have guns so I think your just being lazy.

You can do it for sure. I used to hunt squirrels and rabbits with a sub 500 .177 as a kid. Shot placement is key. My parents have a big backyard and I spent the equivalent of days out there just waiting for good shots on garden rabbits eating the greens. One time I used one of those church key bottle/can openers to put holes in a tuna can and put a tent spike through it into the ground to attract a distemper raccoon that had been seen around, got a perfect shot from above dead between the eyes and put him down. Same rifle also failed to kill rats and birds shot in the abdomen. Those were the best days, man.

Got a beeman .22 and it's taking plenty of squirrels and the raccoons that were trying to get to my chickens. Unfortunately i did put down a small one when i took pot shots and it fell from the tree. It was all fucked up maybe from me shooting or the impact but it was still alive so i sunk two into its skull. I kind of regret it desu but it will become a adult coon one day

500fps is definitely cruel and unusual punishment. I got .177 at 1250fps with Black Widow "Destroyers" (very edgy).
Really lethal on small game.

The main problem is it is slow FPS with a 22 pellet not 177 so it has an arc meaning it is easy to miss at anything but 20 yards max. The animal must be small, the shot well placed and the animal very very close. Frankly its underpowered for hunting anything. of you care about killing it cleanly
