How often do you guys go fishing? I try going at least weekly but it's more like every other week for a couple of hours.

I go out every 2 days or so. It's my excuse to go outdoors. Luckily with fishing, you can go out even if it's raining. Half of the time I don't even catch anything, but that's because I'm just exploring new places and don't throw on the small stuff to search for smaller fish. It's quite fun to use something like a 1/8oz jig and search new bodies of water to see what smaller fish are in there. I probably spend more time just messing about in the woods or around the banks than I do with my line actually out, it's just fun and burns time.

For me... it's the Green Sunfish. Big and fat. Aggressive. Hammers spinners... and you think you have a Smallmouth Bass on the line until you get it out of the water. If you're getting skunked by the bass all day, just throw something in to get a BVLL Green Sunfish.

This and SUPyaking take up most of my time, as it gets hot, I tend to go creek wading because it's shady and cool. Sometimes you don't have good shade options out on a yak.

Can someone give me some tips? Longtime fisherman here, but I recently started fishing in the big nearby river and need some help. The thing is, I want to catch shit other than catfish... but this river is the textbook "catfish river" because it's muddy, rocky, and a strong current. I want to try to see what all is in there to catch, but so far, only catfish. I've tried using a few other lures in more calm areas of the river, but not even a bite. The water is ultra-murky, and I doubt they can even see my black/chartruese plastics. Where would be the best location in a river like this to search for other species? I'm assuming bends where the current is calmer, and where creeks/runoffs empty into the river(there are lots of these and I've seen tiny little minnow sized fish all in them, but nothing else bites.) Also, what lures should I use? I know that there is apparently striped bass, panfish, and some other shit in there based on internet searches... but I don't know where to fins them. Any murky river fishermen out there got tips? I can get to basically anywhere along the river as I live near a stretch that goes for miles and miles and I have no issue going through deep ass woods. Catfishing is just boring to me, I know it's easy to hook a hogg where I live with minimal effort. I'm more of a multi-species kind of guy, and I don't like sitting and waiting with bobbers.

Depending on where your located it could vary. Just find some shallows and look for beds. Start by dams and go down river.

When fishing muddy current always remember the saying, "Any color is good, as long as it's white." Go with very light colors, white being the best. As you catch fish you will see why. They will all be very pale from lack of sunlight that penetrates clear waters, so that is also what they target.

I only have bad luck with ultralights, my bigger rods are all fine with the exception of an Ugly Stik that was my first spinning rod that I dropped in the lake. My Fenwick broke the first time bank flipping a bass, and the second time got caught on a dock I was maneuvering a kayak into. I specifically bought a shorter rod because I thought it'd make it less like to hang up in something and snap.

Just get an Ugly Stik Elite. It's basically a GX2 with a little more graphite. I've put mine up into the ceiling fan by accident and I couldn't even find a mark on the tip. lol

I don't think you actually fish, anon. Obviously fish do not get tan, but fish from extremely murky water are pale and fish from clear water tend to be much darker and more colorful. I dunno why, but it's an extremely obvious different. If you don't believe me, a quick google will come up with hundreds of hits.

I bought a 5'6 Lews Laser for like 25 bucks at Walmart as an interim replacement while I send the Shimano back and see if they'll warranty it. I handful of bluegill yesterday and a shitload of crappie and a dink channel cat with it last night and it'll work for this week but it doesn't cast super-well and isn't near as sensitive as my other ULs.

I have this in the 5'6" and I love it. Dunno how it compares to the Clarus though. It says "medium light" but as you can see by the lure rating, it's an ultra light basically. I can throw 1/32oz jigs very far, but 1/16oz feels like the sweet spot. 1/8oz is the heaviest I throw because it feels like the upper limit without being floppy. For $39 I love it, looks like they may have just recently discontinued it though which sucks. I love me some cork grips.

That's not it. It's one of their cheap Walmart exclusive rods, I also have a M 6'6 Speed Stick combo from there that I'm starting to get a mind to upgrade. They don't even have them on their website. It's rated UL/F 1/32-1/8, IM6, has foam grips, and I'm not sure what the guides are. I just went out and caught something real quick to take a picture of it.

I love my 7ft UL it casts a country mile and still works fine in tight spaces. My 5ft6in UL on the other hand has doodoo castability. Most often when fishing skinny water you will have to do a side arm cast so no real benefit to that short of a rod.

Yeah I know, I was just saying that I also have a Lew's light rod that I like a lot. Lew's makes some good feeling budget rots regardless of what people think. I handled some in Walmart that were like $39 and felt exceptionally nice and not whippy at all.

A fairly small cooler on my board, with 2 20 oz frozen water bottles inside, but I'm usually only shore cooking. I also have a cooler in the car that keeps my other food and drinks really nice, so if I am packing any to take home, I bring only the filets home. It's got the mouth of a greenie for sure, and some of the turquoise striations. Hybrids are so common, in a local lake there are some that look like green sunfish with small mouth bass patterning, and white pec fins.

So do I but I guess since I get in the water once I get there it's less of an issue for me ? My first UL was the shorty because everyone recommended it for the kinda water I fish but it just has never materialized as a benefit for me.

this, i just have a cooler bag from dicks that was like $30 to put in my kayak, they make fishbags for 'yaks that are way more expensive but why bother. anything too small to fit a cooler bag is too small to fish in probably anyway, so the fish bag shape isn't all that necessary and mine fits where the fish bag goes anyway. but i generally just take the cooler bag with me regardless of kayaking or not, just put some frozen water bottles in it.

I used to use a pole like that when I was around 12/13 and caught lots of small cats and tons of bluegills. I think I just might go find my old rod or go buy a new one.

Well, my telescopic rod broke after it got snagged on a rock and I thought the 6lb test would definitely give first. Lesson learned. But now I have an excuse to buy a new rod. What should I get if I want to hurl 1/16oz lures on the lake? GX2 seems too short for the lighter weights to get the distance I want. .

I use a 10 foot B&M West Point crappie rod. It's cheap and a small whip of the rod can send small lures flying. If I'm in tight conditions, I have a 6'6" telescoping rod. I have 3 total teledcoping rods attached to my backpack for when I head down creeks or go on hikes, but use a couple of 2 piece rods and the 10 footer for most other freshwater situations. It's very sensitive and strong enough to land a 5lb 15oz bass. Reposting picture for good measure. I like this one because is shows how small a 1/16oz jig and tube skirt is inside that maw. It takes some getting used to in regards to landing fish if you're used to shorter rods. Whatever you did with the telescoping rod, don't do with any light tackle rods. You are sacrificing strength for sensitivity, so keep that in mind. Even big crappie shouldn't be boat flipped. Try to lip the fish, and if you get snagged, try reeling your rod tip to the snag. I know this isn't always possible. If you're just out of range, take the reel off and slide the rod down the line. It works very well. I also have a Lew's Git R Back that I keep in my gear for when there's no other choice. I got really sick of losing my favorite lures.

So I decided to do some testing with my Daiwa Aird-X Medium Heavy spinning rod. I bought it because I wanted to throw up to 1oz swimbaits. It throws those heavy things well with no real flop despite being at the top of the lure rating. It throws 1/4oz lures equally well which was strange, so I decided to see how light I could go. WTF! I can throw 1/8oz lures almost as far and it feels amazing. How is this possible? This rod is amazing. It's so strange that it can throw stuff in that wide of a range and well under the minimum rating, yet feel almost the same backbone wise regardless. I have powerpro braid 15lb on it and it's great too despite being noisy. I'm just confused about the castability of the lure range. I basically have retired the rod I usually throw 1/8oz stuff on now. Haven't triend anything lighter than 1/8oz, but I'm gonna since it throws them so damn far.

On the bright side of me breaking my 2 favorite and most expensive rods in the last week, I caught a bluegill on a casting bubble + topwater fly as a proof of concept, which will really come in handy when the mayfly hatch starts. Also will probably be good in pressured ponds where bluegills cruise the surface and ignore worms that you throw at them.

Yes and no. Aside from very poorly designed shit, decent cheap stuff will catch fish all day long. 9/10 times more expensive gear just makes it nicer/easier and feels better. As long as you don't buy something with notoriously bad reviews, you will catch fish just fine. Remember... everyone used to use the good ol push button Zebcos for decades, everyone other than the very serious hobbyists and "pros" that is. At this point, fishng gear and tackle is pretty outdated so lots of companies can do it well for cheap.

How do you keep retards from ruining your spot? I fish this place where I was literally the only one for years, now every week there is new litter there and lines broken off all over the water. It depends on where you are located. $40 for the rod or the rod and reel? I like Daiwa rods for price to performance, and I like some Lews rods for budget options. Just get a 1 piece unless you have problems transporting it, that eliminated a lot of issues with potential weak links.

I did consider putting pollock in but honestly there isnt much of the uk's shoreline that offers the chance of catching pollock compared to mackerel and seabass, its mostly just the north some welsh and cornwall... its best to just get them fishing for seabass or mackerel with lures and if there are pollock present they will catch them too

Anyone ever see a fish that isn't listed as being a species in whatever body of water you were in? I need help identifying a small fish I saw. It was slightly bigger than the average minnow, had an off-white semi-translucent body(with translucent fins) and the topside of it's back was dark brown or black about 3/4 of the way down towards the tail, where it became the off-white color. The uni knot is not a strong knot. It is only popular because it has multiple applications. And like I said, small fish. There's a reason no one ties a uni over a palomar on a sportfishing boat where you're targeting tuna with as low as 20lb test.

For hooks I go Palomar all day, but for pre-rigged swimbaits and large lures, it's just not logical to use, so I use the Fish N Fool with great success. I've never been a huge uni fan. It's a good starter knot though.

morning works too for most people... but I have been getting nothing early in the morning the last couple of days, and not much midday either. I went fishing two days in a row at after 6pm and stayed until it got dark at about 8, had bites on many different lures about every other cast. there was so much activity going on during those two outings. these have been money for me lately. use the 1/8oz ones for smaller species, and 1/4oz for larger fish like bass. all my other lures don't seem to work as good for me lately. No idea about the cherrywood rods, but I really like the Berkley Lightning rod line. Stiff, sensitive, only $40. Fantastic for the money.

I also have an older made-in-Korea Shimano FX that's really great for a cheap rod. The current line is made in China so I can't comment yet, but you can get them direct from Shimano on ebay so for $14 I figured I'd try one and see how it compares.

I'd love to know of any online resources for rod reviews. Most of what I've seen are clickbait "blogs" that just regurgitate manufacturer specs.

I patched a small gouge in my fiberglass canoe with a slow dry 2 part epoxy. To my understanding the slow drying ones have more flex when they dry, but a kayak will have a lot more flex that a canoe so it might not work for you. pics?

Yeah, I would first try to get a replacement under warranty if you can. If not, plastic welding by melting the same type of plastic into the leak can help, it even a marine adhesive. It sounds like it might be significant based on the speed at which you sank. In that case, you may have to do a lot more work, like using some sort of sheet plastic as a base to weld it glue to. Flex Seal is also an option.

There are tons of variables that go into fish behavior. Moon phases, barometric pressure, water temperature, oxygen levels, cloud cover, pre/post spawn, fishing pressure. I could go on, but you get the idea. I use an app now that factors most of that stuff and gives you an estimate on when the best days to fish are because I’m fucking lazy. If you don’t want to use that, go with a finesse presentation. Light line with little to no weight and some kind of plastic ( senko, super fluke, etc) fished very slow. I like a weightless Texas rigged senko. Catches fish when nothing else will.

you have to remember... a lot of the methods used on fish are designed around causing the least amount of "degredation" of the meat, this it's not always the most humane. If you think about it logically, paralyzing a creature, at least in the area where you will do the fatal cut, would eliminate the possibilty of pain in the first place. They go deep at times, especially pretty much any time it's sunny and calm out, but can be accessed in shallow waters sometimes. Biggest thing would be to preferably fish from evening until morning. Find rocky areas, especially those close to deep water or associated with a dropoff. They will come up to them to feed at night, stay quiet and keep the light off as much as you can. Baited jig, slip-sinker rig, lit up bobber, or any sort of minnow-imitating lure you can fish near the bottom are ideal. Ideal baits are minnows or leeches, but nightcrawlers work as well. Kastmasters, crankbaits, and marabou jigs are lures that have worked for me. Biggest thing is to keep whatever lure or bait you are using within a foot or two of the bottom as much as you can, they will only leave the bottom when the bite is really fucking on.

Ideal conditions, especially if you are fishing when it's light out, are heavy winds blowing into the shore you are fishing. The chop results in less light getting through, and the mud kicked up from waves attracts baitfish which in turn attracts walleyes. At night it doesn't seem to matter as much. If no rocky areas are available, you will have to make do with weedlines if you can access them from a dock or a steep dropoff just off shore.

Forgot to mention, unless you are lucky enough to have access to a rocky lake shoreline, medium to large rivers with at least slightly clear water are your best bet for shorefishing. You walk or wade medium sized rivers during the day since they are limited to deep holes so they are easy to find, though they tend to be lethargic during the day. For large rivers, chuck lures or float a light up bobber just off the side of rocky shorelines at night, I have caught them less than a foot off shore pretty regularly at night.

Central Mass here.
Yesterday I caught a 3lb largie out of a canal on picrel.
The big bass I have caught have all been with worm on a hook or streamer flies.
I think because of fishing pressure they are less likely to hit big flashy lures.
Googans I've talked to like to use live shiners but that's probably overkill.

bass fishing can often times lead to skunking after skunking because they are the most overpressured fish. everyone wants to catch a bass, people literally go to the same areas DAILY trying to catch them, I've had this problem with local ponds I go to. I used to be the only one that fished there, now there is new trash daily where people fish. the fish straight up DO NOT bite. even the panfish rarely bite. it's really fucked up my spots. just focus on hitting up new spots every time you go out. it's fun to explore new places anyways.

For bass I'll fish the aqueducts and canals. Most of the dams along the Charles and other rivers have fish. Wachusette reservoir is prime for salmonids and smallmouth even though I get skunked there 90% of the time.
Most of the time I'll scope out something on sat maps and see what I can catch.

My boss seems to know his shit about fishing and I told him my friend and I (both in our late 20's, boss is 60) are somewhat interested in the sport even though we've never done it before. Even if my friend doesn't want to tag along I'm heavily considering going even if it's just for one afternoon+night this weekend. My boss has a bunch of poles and stuff he's offering to let me use (I do want to buy my own gear but I guess I should see whether I enjoy the hobby to begin with), and him and his own friend are planning to sleep in their trucks. Boss says he's gonna buy the fishing licenses/tags for all four of us, I dont know if thats possible or a thing.

Is there anything I need to bring as a first timer? I was just gonna bring a good knife, a cooler, water, change of clothes, and a small pup tent. Bug spray and some $ to pay him back for the tag, other little things like that.

Day 4 of getting completely skunked by all species after catching my PB bass and panfish. Not even the bluegill are biting. Very very odd! Anyone know what the fuck is going on? I've never seen anything like it, almost as if the fish literally disappeared.

They're probably in deeper water, assuming you're bank fishing. Try a Carolina rig cast out to the middle of the lake. Bet you'll catch a catfish

Is it connected to other ponds? They probably move around based on temperature. Also the barometric pressure turns off the bite for days sometimes. Idk about where you live, but there's a tropical depression been passing over the east coast areas recently.

they almost have to bite a zman finesse ned head 1/15 oz with half a green 4 inch senko. make sure its on 8lb or less line. preferable 10lb braid to 8lb leader so you can cast far and not have problems with line twist. ive already caught 100s of new england bass on the rig this year alone.
