Compass is accurate, but not really useful for map applications, just lets you know you’re going in approximately the right direction.
The altimeter is handy as an extra tool in conjunction with map and compass to pinpoint exact location, especially in dense bush.
It works off barometric pressure, so pays to calibrate every time you’re at a known point.
