So this board covers hunting, yes? I was wondering if any of you have experience with wild boars.

My farmer friend from Texas is having problems with hogs tearing up his family's land and he invited me on a hunt to thin out their herd. My question is: does .223 have enough power to get through the boars' shoulder "armor." A guy I know said that .223 can have problems with it and that .308 would be better for quick kills. I have a hunting AR-15, but if the safety and ethics dictate I need a .308, I'll buy a gun in it.

TL;DR
.223: good enough for feral boars?

Get the .308 / 7.62 x 51.

With the .223 / 5.56 you definitely run a chance of wounding / maiming the animal.

Plus, I love AR-10s.

Is there an upper limit on calibers for boars? I'm thinking that if I can get something that can do double duty for moose/elk that would be ideal.

Also, If I am going for an AR-10, could someone point towards a good manufacturer?

There are so many options, it's tough to say. My newest is a Quentin Defense upper and lower, all billet. It's the bees knees.

But, if I were you I would step it up a notch and go for another venerable and a little more punch. 30-06 minimum, it's personally my favourite. You can take down moose or black bear easy with a 30-06 and a heavier grain bullet.

.223 is way too small for anything other than thin skinned "small game". Coyotes, Wolf, Dog sure. Pig, no way.

Speaking from experience and hunting various game with various cartridges including .22, .223, .22-250, 30-30, 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag.

.223 works fine if you use good ammo and know how to hit the spine or heart. The main advantage to a .223 is lighting up a pack of pigs with fast follow up shots, but you will probably get off only 1 or 2 shots before the pack disperses.

The small ones are the tastiest. Young males up to 40-50 lb. are fine. The sows up to 150 lb. are pretty tasty and yield bigger cuts of meat. The big boars taste really bad and gamey, and I can't recommend eating them.

I use a .30-06 and a .44 mag myself when I'm hog hunting. If I'm diving into the thick S. Texas brush I leave the range rifle at camp and take my 12 gauge with an 18" barrel, alternating slugs and buckshot. Big hogs are very tough, smart pack animals and have been known to charge and gore humans who aren't even trying to kill them. (pic related) Pursuing them, especially if you surprise them or track a wounded animal, DEMANDS your full attention.

I think that's the point of the article, is that he wasn't doing anything that should prompt an amphibious assault by a swine strike team.

Almost, but not quite. 308 is an excellent choice. 223 will hurt them in a big way, a 308 ends it instantly.

Don't buy into the the armor bullshit. Pigs are not special and die just like everything else. A FMJ .223 does the trick just fine. Hell we kill them left and right with .22s. In fact my p-22 is my second hog weapon of choice. My first is my Toyota. Running them over is the most effective way to kill multiple hogs at once.

Hell you going are to Texas. They've got some of the best laws to eradicate these fuckers in the whole US. They've been on the forefront of this battle for quite some time.

The reason so many people opt for AR style rifles is because of quick follow up shots with a semi auto. Lower recoil from a 223 is a lot easier for almost everyone to land these shots.

JMO but what the hell do I know?

Funny I have never heard that story. That is crazy. San Luis Pass (pronounced "San Loowie" around here) is my primary gigging and wading area. I've gigged the area for a very long time (20+ years). I used to run the grass line along the shore almost exclusively and I never seen sign of hogs (was never looking). There were two good areas for the gigging - one is a large flat nearest the toll booth and the other was an ancient water treatment plant a couple of miles up from the bridge and toll both toward Galveston. My guess is that they were at the water treatment plant. The nearby land owners would often graze cattle around there. I can see the pigs enjoying that high-grass in the area around there.

There's not really a worry about it now. The water treatment plant is gone and they've put up condos all the way up to the toll booth. You can still drive out on the flat next to the toll booth to go gigging.

Gigging is approaching flounder at night as they lie in wait in the shallows to eat and "gigging" or stabbing them using a stick with a long smooth metal point at the end. When walking, you can use lanterns and electrically powered lights (submersible or not). I've seen everything out there - bull reds running out of the grass (scares the piss out of you), alligators, I've run up on irritated cattle at the water's edge. Never pigs...thankfully (considering the article).
