How did early humanity destroy the Saharan forest? Was it just grazing that destroyed the undergrowth of forests?
What civilization caused this?

From what I understand, the temperature there was actually higher, resulting in the ocean to the west releasing more water into the atmosphere resulting in the "African Monsoon Effect" Which filled those large resevoirs and hydrated the land for the not so rainy times.

The global temperature went down, resulting in the disruption of the African monsoon effect. leading to they drying of the north of Africa.

From what I've seen it lines up nearly perfectly with human domestication of grazing animals such as goats and cows.
These animals eat the sapplings of the undergrowth of the forest, in a few hundred years the old trees die after none or little of their sapplings serving, the area becomes a grassland, which becomes a desert.
A forest without regeneration will die. In pic related should be shrubs, sapplings, etc. You shouldn't be able to see for more than a few feet depending on the forest.

I believe that even if the entire human population at the time moved there and farmed all of the grazing animals they could manage, it wouldn't make a dent. The human population was just too small, the animals they could manage too few and weak.
We didn't eat up even a quarter of the Amazon since the start of the industrial revolution with 7 billion people. The sahara forest was bigger.

This is not the case for Ponderosa pine forests. Many of the Western USA forests have tree densities that are up to 10-fold greater than in their natural state. If I remember correctly, natural density is only 120 trees per acre, with the remaining land dominated by grasses. Historical cattle grazing has eliminated much of that grass allowing the tree densities to increase. It also is clearly not true for the tens of millions of acres of pygmy forests (pinon-juniper) that dominate much of the Southwest. But you are right in that the tree/shrub densities in Eastern and Southern deciduous forests are incredibly high.

Actually it lines up with the end of the ice age. The savannah was changed by global climate shifts, as it goes through cycles. This cycle just so happened to have monkeys discover agriculture.

The Sahara, if it had enough trees, could modify local climate enough to sustain itself, but grass could not. A few years of not enough rain and they dried out, allowing loose soil to blow away and dessicate.
