Plants to make shade

No.2151792 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Hello /out/,
For the next year I'd like to have shade on my balcony (hopefully I can try it out this summer even if it's late) by using plants.
What plants would you recommend?
Some more info:
- The balcony (like the building) is made of concrete. Here we have plenty of heat waves during the summer where temperature can be 32-35°C for weeks (25-28 °C at night as well thanks to all the concrete)
- Exposure is east/south east. The tip of the balcony has sun until 2pm during the summer.
- I have both hydroponic and regular soil/pot irrigation set up so I can hook it up to the most convenient one.
- It needs to grow 2 meters tall in order to reach the floor above and fully shade the balcony.
- Small root system -> better.

I was thinking vines to make a green wall. Tomatoes are not bushy enough (I already have some for, well, tomatoes so they're trimmed and skinny).
Grapevines are kind of permanent and I've never grew one so I'm not sure about it. I think they also need way too much space for roots, they grow slow etc.
What about hops? Peas (maybe too hot)? Any tips?
Many thanks!
