A $100 rod now is on par with the high end ones of the 90s. I dont intend to spend more than $250 each replacing my graphite 6 weight or adding a new 8, or 12 weight rod to my lineup because any more than that I'd be too scared of breaking it to actually use it. I can appreciate an expensive rod, but after a certain point it's just not x number of dollars better than a cheaper rod. I've spent $350-$400 on some niche fiberglass stuff but only because of a lifetime warranty and fiberglass is inherently more durable than graphite.

Start out with mono instead of braid if you weren't going to already. Once you get good you can go to braid. Braid will much more easily nest up due to the limberness of it when you backlash.

I am relativly new when it comes to fishing and have been getting back into it this summer and having a blast even if I havent caught anything really of note. I have a new/beginner question that I am sure someone can help me with. I mostly fish in large creeks all the way up to major rivers and deal with the flow/current of the river and want to know whats the best way to sinker down/setup my lines so that I dont have to constantly babysit them when they float down river? I like to fish with livebait and do a fair bit of catfish fishing and since I live in the middle of the US I only fish freshwater.

I havent gone fishing since i was a young kid but my nephew is coming to stay with me for a few days and I want to get him outdoors and away from his video games, as luck would have it his visit lines up with the licence free fishing week here in Ontario. So I ran out to the store and bought a cheap medium/light rod/reel combo, a cheap "panfish tackle kit" and a few other odds and ends. Does the stuff in the pic look like it might work? Not looking to catch any monsters, and I'm more just trying to teach the kid patience and how to enjoy the outdoors, but it would be nice to atleast have him land a little bluegill or something.

Nah, like poppers. No diving lip, they sit right on the surface and the bass will come up and hit them in a big splash. Fun as hell way to fish. They tend to bite on the pause (sometimes a full 20 seconds into the pause), and make sure to delay the hookset just a little after the splash.

The soft plastics looks like an assortment from creme, I have caught fish on them but they are oversized for bluegill and pumpkinseed. (unless you are fishing a place were 9+ inch fish are common). Good for catching bass, green sunfish, redbreast, creek chub, crappie, perch, maybe a trout, etc.

I think the best bet is the marabou jigs and the beetle spins. Got any jigheads? you probably want small stuff like 1/16th, put a grub on and clip on the spin.

The $10 "panfish tackle kit" came with a few tiny jigs, (pic related). I dont have a scale but i'd guess they're around that weight. I can always go and grab other stuff too so thanks for the advice.

the spinner setup with a grub or the hair jig will work for the more aggressive fish like green sunfish and small bass. just reel it fast enough to keep it near the top of the water column, but not breaking the surface. pass it by things like floating plants and within a couple feet of submerged logs, something will come out and hit it most likely.

you want to take the jig head off that spinner arm and flip it around. the eye on the jig head should be facing up towards the spinner blade.

also, if using bait like worms or crickets, you should get some long shank/aberdeen hooks if you don't have them. size 4 to 6. this is because fish will engulf the bait and rsk of them swallowing the hook is very high with shorter hooks.

If you can walk the whole river try to find some deep pools, that's where groups of them congregate. If you are fly fishing you might be able to fish that section but you would get snagged alot on normal gear. Sometimes if the river temps are too high the trout will migrate to colder tributaries like Brooks or head waters of the river

One more thing is that trout spook easy, try to move slowly and stay out of sight if possible.

The ditch behind my house when I was a kid. I could walk all the way to a river a few miles away, and when it would flood, all sorts of little cichlids and one time even some really decent catfish would swim up and become stuck in the few areas that were no deeper than three inches or so. I'm not sure I would call it fishing, because most of the time I would use my hand to scoop them out. All sorts of creatures would show up down there. For me, it was a conduit to endless adventure. In summer it was always like 10 degrees cooler than everywhere else. In the south that's like finding heaven on earth. I miss that ditch.

In regards to rod holders, I would say look for videos of someone modding your model of kayak with rod holders, so you get a feel for location. Kayaks have so many different types of curvatures that it would benefit you in doing research so the holders aren't at a bad position for you. Or install some track somewhere and get the tracmate compatible rod holders. I was going to flush mount but I found that the reels were not going to sit well, so I ended up mounting holders to my crate in the back, but I'm on a SUP. That may not be an option for you.

Not really. I fish some ponds that have tons of 1-2 pounders, it's what you catch 99% of the time... but you can see huge ones swimming around, they just rarely bite. I'm guessing they are well enough fed on panfish. Gotta catch them at the right time. The big ones just look at everything you throw like "yeah buddy, I'm not stupid."

Good job, they're a really tricky fish to get a hookset on. I long ago came to terms with looking like a goober who swings on everything when I'm fishing for corbina. I read somewhere that they feed by crunching the crabs and then slurping up the pieces. That's why you have to be quick with the swing and why you so frequently reel in a bare hook.

Think about it logically... small young ones are gonna feed more often because they are growing fast and also they are inexperienced. Large bass are many years old and are experienced enough to not only detect fishermen, but also have preferences on what they like to eat. They are also big enough to engulf any small fish they can catch, so they are likely already fed for the day by the time you get to them. Some people say they aren't that smart... but I had the privelege of fishing the same small private ponds my whole life, I can tell you 100% that bass who have been caught before are harder to catch again. They DO detect the more obvious and unnatural methods. The monsters feed mostly in the morning as the sun is coming up. Mostly on smaller fish, or topwater things like frogs, small turtles and small snakes.

A few weeks ago, I was fishing sod riffles under a dam and vertical jigging a worm in an eddy along a stone wall. All of a sudden, a 5lb carp swims up and just stares at my bait. Just floating there. Mind you, this was in about a foot of water and the carp's back was practically sticking out of the water. Yeah, 99% of pond bass over 3lbs have been caught probably 3-5 times and won't look twice at lures any more unless they live in some super-secluded private farm pond that never gets fished. For public park ponds you just need to resign yourself to sizing down lures and focusing on smaller guys.

I'm sure that's true of the bigger ones. This guy was so small I didn't realize he was on since I was still trying to scoop up more sand crabs. Was struggling to get them with no visible beds. Probably got as many micro-worms as I did sand crabs. In hindsight, I should have collected them ahead of time instead of trying to get them as needed.

An airbrush is key, it’s pricey but I recommend a UV light activated epoxy for your finish clear coat. You can build a “curing bucket” with some tinfoil and black light LED strips off of Amazon. I’m still very amateur and lures is a side quest in my painting so I just order cheap clear plastic crank baits. Invest in white primer so your paint sticks and looks bright, I use Vallejo. Get experimental like spraying over fishnets, string, doilies for easy patterns. Remeber fish fundamentals like a whiteish belly. I forget the name but the little clear rudder in front of the bait, be sure to buff it with a very high grit sand paper or sanding straw so the epoxy cures clear on it.

I come from a nerdy warhammer painting background so I already had a lot of paint colors, just buy colors you like at first. YouTube is an amazing resource to learn, I stumbled across a guy named Baker builds and he has some really nice beginner videos.

If I can be a devil on your shoulder, pull the fucking trigger homie, learning to paint and art in general has been the most fulfilling thing in my life and I’m very happy for it.

Can’t stress the YouTube/baker builds enough. You will learn all you need to know from a little research. Start up cost can be a little over whelming but skill and experience will give you cheap tricks and make it worth it.

Look up anchor trolleys. Depending on where you are, tying off from the handles can be dangerous. You get hit with a big wake or tide or water starts moving, you don't want to take it side on. The trolley system foxes the anchor connection to the front or back opf the boat so you can take the waves at a better angle. Even if it's not a safety thing, it's helpful to let you angle in the directions you want, and makes it more comfortable dealing with any waves or chop.

Front and back might be a pain in the ass to work with, both from casting lines and just maneuvering on the boat. I personally wouldn't go that route but maybe you can make it work, half trhe fun is customizing and finding solutiokns that work for you. I like the trolley because I tie it off to my handle, angle it how I like through the trolley loop, and then if I get hooked up to a fish, I can just untie, let the rope (which is connected to a buoy) float, and then I don't have to worry about getting tangled. I can just go grab it once I'm done. Never used the pole but I know those are popular options

I definitely plan on getting a front anchor on a trolley but I won’t be able to get my hands on one before I head to the cabin so I’ll just have to figure it out. I’m thinking I should throw a small anchor tied to the back and then stabilize the front with a pole through the handle.

I have looked up some different anchor trolley builds for mine, but quick and dirty, grab a hand weight and some ski rope. Don't start cutting and drilling into the yak until you get a good feel of what will work best for you. It's a fun process to go through. For me it's been really weird since I use a paddleboard and have it totally set up for kayaking, and I haven't put a single hole or screw into it. Everything is removable and can be compacted for easy travel. It's all about what you want out of the experience, and how much money you have too. If you've got the money, spend it and get the best. If not, time is of more value. Spend time with, and get to know your kayak. After time, it should feel almost like an extra appendage; a living addition to your body. Once you get that feel, you'll better know how you want to organize the craft.

That’s really why I went with the bonafide ss127. It really seemes like the guys at bonafide really too the time when they were designing it to think about it being a fully kitted out fishing rig right down to the rear handle that folds down so it gets out of the way of motors and power poles. It’s so easy to run wires and install new brackets because of how accessible the interior space is. It just seems like the best platform to start building on. I’ll take my time and really think about how I want to build it out.

Never fished for like so I’m not sure. I’m not big on fishing those deep fish. I like to sit off shore and cast around the weeds. No need for expensive fish finders and bullshit like that. Can’t say I’ve ever seen one small enough for perch.

90% of the places i fish, the only predatory fish are perch and pike, so they are pretty much the only thing you catch, unless you go to a put-and take (shit) for trout or hit the salmon season on the Swedish runs

ocean fishing has diversity but all i really care about catching in the ocean is mackerel because fuck, i love mackerel they are so tasty.
the whole country here is OBSESSESD with Cod fishing, mainly jigging for em, i get it, you can get some HUGE fish (pic related) but unless its a young fish they just taste like slight off warm water ...

you get smaller ones on hot days in the shallows, and if its been consistently hot the big ones will fuck off, but here unless its a pretty large lake they tend to move closer to inlet/outflow waters instead and lurk in the vegetation leading up to those, lots of oxygenated water and moving water is cooler

I rely on the following lures: uv pink and ghost hot n tot by storm, rainbow trout pattern panther martin #4, 1/16th pink or white jighead size 8 with a bubblegum gulp trout worm threaded on. Bass pro Trout maxx uv bubblegum worm is 2-3/4'' worm that i like to wacky rig on a size 8 owner mosquito hook with a single split shot about a foot up. I bounce this around or drift with a bobber. When i am desperate, i also use pautzke eggs natural deluxe in a uv pink spawn sac. A pink woolly will work too.

Great lakes steelhead eat smaller presentations compared to coastal steel.

Water turbidity just has to do with the bottom substrate, go fish rocky places if you want clear water. Fish can have a bad bad taste from by product of algae in the water, avoid catch and cooks during algae blooms.

Also all esox species taste the same, no real difference in pickerels, pike, and muskies. If anything pickerel tastes the best.

They're all kind of special in their own way. I've come to favor crappie quite a bit, because they're tasty and require a completely different presentation than a lot of fish. I've been fishing a tandem rig mainly, but I switched the weighted jig head to be the higher up lure, and the weightless aberdeen to be the bottom, and that works best for me. I'm going to keep playing around with the configuration, though.

So here’s my gear for my first weekend back into fishing.

Tub contains variety of hooks for rigging, weights and extra soft plastics. The small plastic box is the soft plastics I’ll take with me onto the water. The tackle box contains jitterbugs, poppers, frogs, spinners, jigs, skirted jigs, different types of crank baits, spoons, chatter baits and probably a couple others I’m forgetting. I need to get a pair of pliers and a few other things together still.

I love my Penn Battle 3 1000. It's not really any heavier than most competition despite being all aluminum(which I like for durability sake). I just don't feel like you need to spend as much on ultralight stuff if you plan on mostly catching smaller fish. Something like a sienna fg($30) feels just as smooth as any reel, at least when new.

Crappie will hit lots of different shit as long as they aren't overpressured. In busy lakes and shit they might require more detail, but in places where not many people fish, I've had them bite almost anything they can fit in their mouth. Funny enough though, I've noticed that they aren't as accurate with their strikes as other fish. I've watched them miss strikes multiple times in a row on small swimbaits. I slowed down the speed and they started connecting.

Yeah, where I live, everything, even crap fish, are pressured. The only records that have been logged in the state in the last 20 or so years have been on private lakes or ponds. I could probably go with some sort of live bait to do better, but I enjoy lure fishing. Even if I soak a live bait, I also want to be tossing a lure. In the ocean, this is extremely beneficial. I have worked lures to get some struggle in the water, had fish boil on the lure, and then take the live bait. I've also been feeding the fish in a local pond and stocking it myself with different cichlids and crappie, which has worked out really well. The bluegill and sunfish have gotten nice and fat, and the average crappie size has gone up as well. Nature will pay back the effort you put in.

It works well. The only downside is hangups. A good trick is to get an old tire rim or something heavy, and build a PVC tree to sink down there. Lures will slide off the smooth sides and you'll be less prone to snags.

In my opinion it absolutely constitutes abuse, they should release it quickly after taking pictures. With that being said to my (very limited) understanding these fish were at one point extremely threatened and have now recovered to the point that they are nuisances at piers where they take fish off of peoples lines assuming that offshore and inshore goliath groupers are part of the same population. Abundance doesn't excuse poor treatment of the fish though.

Yeah it's a yellow. You can tell by the white chin barbels. I've caught them in all the city ponds and sewers I've fished in the area.

For small fish in shallow water, use either live or fake insects that float or sink really slow. Also use long shank hooks that are on the smaller side, but not too small. If your hook is too small, you will just catch the smallest of the fish and not the bigger ones.

caught a ton of white bass today me and the gf rented a boat for the 4th and went on a pretty decent sized lake. kept 5 okay size ones. filleted them up breaded and fried them and made the best fish taco's I ever had. fried tortillas, salsa verde slaw, corn salsa, onions, and sweet and spicy pickled jalepenos. deffinantly recommend.

p.s. soak the fillet's in water with lemon juice to take that super fishy taste out

here's the bass they hit on everything today; jigs with worms, caught two at once one a crappie rig with minnows. rooster tail spinners, I even caught 2 trolling a crankbait. the lake we were on was electric motor only so real chill quiet fishing. caught a perch as well I really wanted a walleye but the bass scooped up everything before anything else could get there

buy a medium firm 6ft pole reel combo for like 30 bucks at wal-mart that will serve you for everything from trout to bass or anything you catch in a lake. no need to get expensive right away I've fished for 16 years and never bought a rod or reel over 50$. buy some number 10 to number 12 sized hooks and 4lb line. a variety of weights they usually have them in variety packs. learn to tie a clintch knot on youtube and look-up how to fish for trout in a lake theres tons of info on any type of fish and how to fish them ina given time of year. other than that just get out there and do basic bobber fishing for blue-gill or something that will keep you entertained while getting to know your rod and how to cast well

Destroyed a lot of gear today, turns out to no ones surprise tsunamis pliers are garbage. Bent the pliers out of shape, put a pinhole in my waders and broke off a nice popper. Concluded that poppers only need a siwash tail hook, the belly is entirely superfluous and exists only to maim fish.

Hopefully I won’t either. Tomorrow morning is its first real voyage. I took it out for a quick test paddle earlier today then took it out of the water and installed an anchor trolly and made an anchor stake so I don’t float away. Hopefully it works.

No, the bonafide SS127 seems like it is really set up to run a motor which I intend to buy over the winter. Until then I’ll get my workout from paddling. Im thinking my Christmas present to myself will be a minn Kota and a power pole micro.

It will be a good stiffness to handle both small and large fish. The perfect middle-ground do-all rod. Then pair it with a cheap Shimano Sienna FG reel in 3000 size.

It's smaller than you think yet will hold lots of line and have lots of drag if you need it. I'd use Trilene XL 8lb line at max. Personally I'd use 6lb though.
