I recommend picaridin LOTION (not spray) for bug repellant.

it is less sticky than DEET, but I found the spray much less effective than the lotion.

Well, depends on your location and climate, but if you have higher terrain nearby, that would be ideal.

I hiked in the mountains at between 3000-4800 ft yesterday. It was reasonably cool despite being 95F a few hours away in my city.

Also, find swimming holes. If there's a waterfall, there's a decent chance the water might be deep enough to swim in. Water in the mountains is always cool, even in summer.

Don't have fucking air conditioning for one thing. All the people I work with are bitching endlessly about the heat because they go home and sleep in a refrigerator every night and they never get used to it.

It's hot out there for sure, but if you live with it you get used pretty quickly. A hat and lots of water and even landscaping which I've been doing this year really isn't that bad. I certainly don't feel the way the others do that's for sure.

Just accept that you're going to be hot and sweaty. Bring lots of water. I'm working outside in this weather.

You can also go somewhere where it'll be cool. I got to hike over snow on Monday, which was pretty wild considering it was 44 celsius locally.

Depends where you are. If the humidity is low, you should have no problem doing up to 10 miles in 95 degree heat with a daypack. But you stated bug problem seems to suggest you're somewhere with high humidity?

Yep, humidity is around 50+% here. I've been to places where it was dry and the heat wasn't too bad, but where I am you can still feel the heat even in the shade.
