We've had these threads for a while now >>2077817 but I forgot to link to the previous one. Archery is only an indoor sports if you make it. Most people who shoot traditional shoot outdoors, and most of the people in /arch/ shoot traditional.

I've been thinking about making a wood bow. I like archery but most people I know that buy modern bows are the biggest larpers I know of, so I want it to be more of a DIY bushcrafty kinda thing. Would ash wood work well for the bow? Is the wood for the arrows irrelevant? Are charred arrow points a meme?

Yeah I know making a bushcraft wood bow is larping too but at least I'm making something with my hands instead of endlessly buying gear, and I need a quarantine project.

I've been doing some stone age larping and have already made myself a strong bow. I have started harvesting saplings around my house to make homemade arrows, and while they are very straight when compared to branches I am having trouble finding Neolithic techniques for straightening the arrow shafts. I already have the rest of the components for making the arrow (sinew for binding, stone arrowheads, split feathers) but I just cannot seem to find out how ancient archers managed to make straight arrowshafts. Should I just give up and start with a bigger piece of wood and whittle it down using a knife, or is there some other method that I haven't been able to find? I have ideas about wood boiling and tension weights to straighten them out, but I would like input.

That makes a lot of sense. I have done wood boiling to bend pieces for armchairs and the like, but it never occurred to me to simply boil the water inside green wood over an open fire to make it more pliable. It's probably my own inexperience with green wood working that made me overlook it, I'll probably have to soak my shafts before I attempt anything like that since I'd left them out to dry so I could use coarse stones to sand off the branch attachments. Thanks for the video and information

Wooden selfbow =/= primitive archery

There's an entire spectrum; some people shoot arrows fletched with goose feathers and tipped with knapped flint from bows caved with stone tools and finished with hide glue and other people shoot carbon arrows from bows with space age finishes and synthetic strings.

The point is to normalize the rate of water loss throughout the whole piece. I seal, split, peel, and car cure in the same day. Less than a week after harvesting.

Wood and bone break off pretty much immediately. It's best to buy field points, look up local regulations for hunting points. If they were legal, I'd scavenge junkyards to make trade points.

If you don't know how to hunt, don't do it. Tracking, spotting, and field dressing are all absolute bitches to do if you don't have any experience, so instead of jumping into the wilderness and hoping for the best try to find a hunting class nearby. Joining a hunting group to gain some experience is also really important, and if all else fails join a wilderness photography group (cheap way to learn how to track and stalk) and then look up field dressing online and practice with unbutchered cuts from your local meathouse.

Bought a bow today. The boy selling me the bow was very questionable.
He got annoyed that I wanted to draw some of the bows and kind of just stared at me everytime I'd ask a question. Wouldn't even respond when I tried to make conversation. I was hoping to talk to someone else. Was hoping to chat to a boomer or someone who can actually talk. Not a literal child.

Saw a yt vid posted here of a Brit being in Bulgaria making survival bow and arrow, describing good woods and proceedures for these, but and given the next 8 vids I saw a week later were at childish at best, I don't really know where to start.
Downloading and reading books on fletchery and archery, ain't gun do squat for me wo/ the practical side; next month I'll have 2--3 w outside the city, and I'd like to have read up til then. So please, inundate with me any possibly useful info.

Pick up a recurve from https://www.alibowshop.com to keep you occupied. They sell arrows pretty cheaply, too.
The book you're looking for is called The Bowyer's Bible. It covers design, materials, and technique. Also has essays on fletching. There's also Primitive Archer Magazine, for on the fly tips, but in order to go in depth, it's best to just get the book. Volumes 1 and 2 will do most people.

I saw some prices in the 300 range when I'd opened, and got discouraged to continue browsing. My bad.
One of the bigger websites for my cunt for archery supplies rougly offers picrel brands. Fiberglass arrows for 6 local currencies, ~3usd.

The last time I'd drawn was as a kid was a bow my dad or granddad had made me. I don't think it'd be prudent to buy anything without knowing my current strength.
