I have done overnight trips with nothing more than a hammock, sheet of bug netting, spare socks, tin cup, bag of jerky and a sweater wrapped up in a wool throw-blanket, a bottle of vodka in my hand, and a lighter and pocket knife in my jeans pocket. but that was a fairweather overnighter 6 or so miles into the woods. distance, terrain, weather, experiance, and length of trip are all factors. realy 20-30 liters is plenty for a night or two if you dont overpack, which mist people do, but 50+ liters could be needed for more intense hikes and trips. usualy I find 30 liters to be enough for 3-4 days up in the mountains if the sleeping bag is attatched to the outside of the pack, nobody should be useing a 50l pack for an overnighter unless they have a very bulky sleep system they keep inside the pack, or lots of bulky/extra gear like camera equipment
