What GPS Apps Do You Guys Use For Hiking And Plotting Your Own Trails?

What apps do you guys use to follow trails or mark your own? It seems like the age of the handheld dedicated gps device is over and everyone is using phones.

I listened to someone's advice here on using your own phone as a GPS and I didn't like it.

Hit the trail using Gaia GPS app. Already had the map of the area downloaded along with my route. Either the trail was not up to date or my phone had a hard time locating me but it was showing me as off trail multiple times. It kept re-adjusting my position. I just gave up using it and followed my route as best as I could.

What about just a topo map app just in general? Doesn't have to have all that extra stuff with trails. What apps have you tried that are mainly just topo map functionality?

No because for me it's pointless. I can just buy a paper map and have more space and less weight for my multi day trip. Anyway I used gaia maps and I downloaded alltrails.

I used guthook for a recent hike and found it useful. Was very accurate with details on water sources, hotels, stores etc. Download all the information before you set off then use GPS to keep track of where you are - no need to stay online.

I save a picture of the map of the area to my phone, or I take a picture of the map if there is one at the trail head. Then I use a compass in case I get turned around.

Only seems to be NZ specific, but it’s really handy. I just use it to plan a trip, and carry a paper map in case I need it.
You’re can search names and plot routes etc.
PC culture obviously hasn’t affected NZ place names much...

Map Toaster
Only seems to be NZ specific, but it’s really handy. I just use it to plan a trip, and carry a paper map in case I need it.
You’re can search names and plot routes etc.

i use Locus Map 4.
only free offline map one that i found.
but i use my etrex most of the time.
phone is just backup maps.

99% map or app issue. The GPS data used is identical between phone and gps-device. Only difference might be the decibel you get with bigger antennas.

I use osmand. It's free as in freedom. If you install the app through fdroid you can download all the maps as free as in beer as well.

Really cool AR app. point your phone at the hills and it names all the hills. Free or there’s a 6.50 month or 41 yearly subscription for offline tracks and not really sure what the others do. Night time here so overlay is shown with camera covered, you don’t need to see my room ha ha. It’s really astonishingly accurate though, highly recommend. .

Oh shows path of sun n moon above too.
Pic below is a local walk. Just tap on destination for route, details bottom right.
Most info is accurate, track, hut location, place names.
But that time is WAY off. It’s accurate from the bottom right hut icon, but I’m a few km away from that. I think the track has been used more and improved, but still always taken at least 9hrs. But definitely some handy features. I haven’t played with it much yet.
Anyway, try it, it’s free.
Let me know what you think.

My fault, I’d put my starting point miles away.
This thing is fucking genius. All these icons are route markers to lakes, ferries, wine trails, walking and cycle tracks. Click on one and it gives you an overview and then highlights the whole route.
Also shows local attractions like parks and clubs. Better than other options I’ve tried, even for car navigation. Damn will have to get pro though, you leave reception here soon after leaving town...

osmand+ is free as in freedom (and in price if you download it from the f-droid store). it takes some configuring at first but you can make it into a good hiking map. you can also easily contribute to openstreetmaps, which it uses, and fix errors or add missing trails.

This. Really good in UK. Only problem i've had is some of the trails seem to be missing sections on the map but the trail is obviously still there. It has a lot of features as well, i'm still learning to use them all. The navigation assistant sucks though and it really can't generate a route properly.

I've been looking for a good weather app but can't seem to find one. Either all ad ridden or too niche and cost money/sub.
If anyone can recommend something that would be great. Free, Cracked or ad free is a must.

YR Weather. It’s Norwegian I think. All the farmers here in NZ use it because it’s more accurate than our local met service.

I use Caltopo, it's free. The desktop website is good for route planning and printing paper maps ahead of time as well.

With either OpenStreet Maps (one of the many outdoor focused versions) or a custom map made with Google satellite images of the area I'm /out/ing at downloaded to the phone. (Satellite images aren't as great as they sound at first)
